Training Thursdays: Get Trained on Docker and Oracle Linux

Docker is an open platform management tool for Linux Containers. It provides a means for developers and system administrators to build and package applications into lightweight containers. The container is independent from the host operating system and kernel version. As a result, you can run the same application, unchanged, on laptops, data center virtual machines, and any cloud. You can transfer this container to another machine that runs Docker and run the application without any compatibility issues. The following lists additional advantages of running applications within Docker containers:

  • Docker images contain only the content needed to run an application so they are smaller than virtual machines, which require the entire operating system.
  • A Docker container runs faster than an application that includes the overhead of an entire virtual machine.
  • A Docker container includes its own network interfaces, file system, and memory, which allows the application running in the container to be isolated and secured from other processes on the host computer.

You can learn to use Docker with Oracle Linux, as well as learn about many other topics, by taking the Oracle Linux 7: Advanced Administration course. You can take this course as a:

Announcing the general availability of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 4

The Oracle Linux team is pleased to announce the general availability of the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) Release 4 for Oracle Linux 6 and Oracle Linux 7.  This release, based on the 4.1 mainline kernel, delivers many important new features and enhancements engineered for modern cloud infrastructure.  

  • Significant performance improvements through enhancements to features like automatic NUMA balancing and CPU schedulers, and the introduction of new features like zswap, zram, the LZ4 compression algorithm, network batch transmissions and low-latency network polling.
  • More options for boosting the security of systems and the applications they host. UEK Release 4 now includes kernel address space randomization, a new random number system call and updates in key areas like SELinux, nftables, SHA256 and SHA512.
  • Real-time kernel and userspace patching with Ksplice for Oracle Linux to simplify managing cloud infrastructure and improve security.
  • Support for key cloud technologies. Xen host and guest domain feature and performance enhancements, Open vSwitch and VXLAN improvements for networking, cgroups and namespace enhancements for linux containers and Docker.
  • Enhancements to Oracle Linux DTrace for dynamic, real-time system tracing on production systems
  • The production release and support of Ceph Storage for Oracle Linux Release 1.0, based on the upstream Firefly release
  • New real-time kernel features including timerless (tickless) multitasking and the addition of the deadline scheduling class
  • Enhanced infiniband features including improved protocols, drivers and firmware.
  • A number of updates to key areas such as XFS, Btrfs, Ext4, NFS, FUSE and the Overlay file systems.
  • A number of driver updates supporting the latest hardware.

Announcing the general availability of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 7

We are pleased to announce the availability of the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 7 (UEKR3U7) for Oracle Linux 6 and Oracle Linux 7. This is the seventh quarterly update release for UEK Release 3 (Version 3.8.13-118) and includes driver updates and a consolidation of fixes for bugs and security issues.

Some notable highlights include:

  • For Oracle Linux 7 installations, support has been included for network teaming, which includes active-backup, broadcast, load-balancing and round-robin modes
  • Continued enhancements for Linux containers including the introduction of the new LXC flag --privileged=rt which allows the administrator the ability to run real-time processes
  • Support for Intel® Broadwell processors
  • Xen improvements, including updates to netfront and netback drivers
  • Device driver updates (e.g. storage devices, network cards) from key partners, such as:
    • Broadcom
    • Chelsio
    • Emulex
    • Intel®
    • Mellanox
    • QLogic
    • VMware

Docker Engine 1.8 released

Oracle is pleased to announce the release of Docker Engine 1.8 for Oracle Linux 6 and 7 to the addons channel on both the Unbreakable Linux Network and the Oracle Yum Repository. This release aligns with the upstream Docker project. Oracle has worked closely with the upstream project to ensure that Docker builds and runs on Oracle Linux.

Note that Docker 1.8 is only supported with the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 on Oracle Linux 6. The Red Hat Compatible Kernel is not supported. 

There is no automatic upgrade from the previous Docker 1.6.1 release, as the package name has changed in this release. Containers created with the previous version will continue to work with Docker 1.8.

Thanks so much to everyone that stopped by our booth and went to our sessions at LinuxCon North America 2015! We had a great time and it was fantastic getting the opportunity to meet and speak with many of you in person.

Some of the things that are top of mind for Linux users are (obviously!) the cloud impact on data center design, container technologies, OpenStack, security, and so on. Wim Coekaerts is Keynote speaker at LinuxCon North America

Oracle is one of the biggest contributors to Linux but it’s also at the forefront of exploring what is possible with cloud computing and containers, including integrations with Docker and contributions to the Open Container Initiative. 

This year Oracle is sponsoring LinuxCon North America and Wim Coekaerts, Sr.VP Oracle Linux and Virtualization Engineering will be keynote speaker. He will be talking at the event specifically about how the cloud revolution is changing the role of the operating system, a very relevant topic for attendees. Amanda McPherson of Linux Foundation, spoke to Wim at Oracle’s campus in Redwood Shores a few weeks ago, and in this short video preview, Wim tells if the operating system still matters in a world of virtualization and containers and how that impacts application development.

Announcing the general availability of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 6

We are pleased to announce the availability of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 6 (UEKR3U6) for Oracle Linux 6 and Oracle Linux 7. This is the sixth quarterly update release for UEK Release 3 (Version 3.8.13-98) and includes driver updates and a consolidation of fixes for bugs and security issues.

Some notable highlights include:

  • Driver for Intel Sandy Bridge memory controllers (sb_edac) version 1.0.0 included
  • New hardware support for SGI UltraViolet 3 platform
  • LXC Improvements in kernel and userspace including a new --privilege option when creating containers
  • Xen improvements such as preventing soft lockups due to long-running hypercalls and preventing memory leaks in the Xen block driver
  • DTrace improvements for using User-Level Statically Defined (USDT) probes in 32-bit applications on 64-bit hosts
  • Support for more than eight PTP hardware clocks (PHC)
  • Device driver updates (e.g. storage devices, network cards) from key partners, such as:
    • Adaptec
    • Broadcom
    • Cisco
    • Emulex
    • Intel
    • QLogic
    • VMware

Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 5 Now Available

We are pleased to announce the availability of Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 5 (UEKR3U5) for Oracle Linux 6 and Oracle Linux 7. This is the fifth quarterly update release for UEK Release 3 (Version 3.8.13-68) and includes driver updates and a consolidation of fixes for bugs and security issues.

Some notable highlights include:

  • The turbostat tool is now included with the kernel and can be used to provide information on processor topology and statistics, such as temperature and frequency.
  • Updates to the bonding driver to enable the ethtool command, which shows useful data like link aggregate speed and duplex mode.
  • The SHA-512 hash algorithm is now available for signing kernel modules during installation.
  • The ability to use swap files that reside on NFS shares is available as a technology preview.
  • Xen EFI support has been added.
  • Device driver updates (e.g. storage devices, network cards) from key partners, such as:
    • Broadcom
    • Cisco
    • Emulex
    • HP
    • Intel
    • Mellanox
    • Microsoft

Announcing General Availability of Oracle Linux 7.1

We're happy to announce the general availability of Oracle Linux 7 Update 1, the first update release for Oracle Linux 7. All packages are currently available on ULN and public yum; ISO installation images will be freely available for download from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud soon.

Oracle Linux 7 Update 1 ships with the following kernel packages:

  •     Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) Release 3 (kernel-uek-3.8.13-55.1.6.el7uek) for x86-64
  •     Red Hat Compatible Kernel (kernel-3.10.0-229.el7) for x86-64

Oracle Linux 7 update 1 provides the latest features and innovations, such as:

  • Linux container support using either Docker or LXC with UEK Release 3
  • Comprehensive dynamic tracing with DTrace and UEK Release 3
  • Production support for Btrfs with UEK Release 3
  • The latest 3rd party hardware support

Announcing General Availability of Oracle Linux 6.6

We're happy to announce the general availability of Oracle Linux 6 Update 6, the sixth update release for Oracle Linux 6. You can find the individual RPM packages in our public yum repository now; ISO installation images will be freely available for download from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud soon.

Oracle Linux 6 Update 6 ships with the following kernel packages:

  • Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) Release 3 (kernel-uek-3.8.13-44.1.1.el6uek) for x86-64
  • Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) Release 2 (kernel-uek-2.6.39-400.215.10.el6uek) for i386 
  • Red Hat Compatible Kernel (kernel-2.6.32-504.el6) for i386 and x86-64
By default, both the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel and the Red Hat Compatible Kernel for the specific architecture (i386 or x86-64) are installed and the system boots the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel.

Notable features in this release include:

  • Fully integrated DTrace support with UEK Release 3.
  • Full Linux Containers (LXC) support in UEK Release 3.
  • Btrfs is fully supported when using the the UEK (Release 2 or 3).
  • Enhanced SSSD support for Active Directory
  • A new daemon for Hyper-V, which includes the hypervfcopydhypervkvpd, and hypervvssd packages, which provides the Hyper-V file-copy, key-value pair (KVP), and volume shadow copy service (VSS) daemons for an Oracle Linux guest that is running under Hyper-V on a Microsoft Windows Host.

Ahoy! Cast off with Docker on Oracle Linux

There's no need to upgrade to Oracle Linux 7 to start playing with Docker: we've built it for Oracle Linux 6 and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 and released it into the addons channel on http://public-yum.oracle.com. This release of Docker uses the native libcontainers engine by default as well as supporting btrfs as the storage engine. 

If you've already got Oracle Linux 7 installed, don't worry we have you covered: we've released Docker for Oracle Linux 7 as well.

Installation

To install Docker on Oracle Linux 6:

  1. Enable the ol6_addons channel in /etc/yum.repos.d/public-yum-ol6.repo
  2. Run:
    # yum install docker

To install Docker on Oracle Linux 7:

  1. Enable the ol7_addons channel in /etc/yum.repos.d/public-yum-ol7.repo
  2. Run:
    # yum install docker

Enable btrfs support

Docker uses device-mapper devices as the default storage engine. To switch to using btrfs as the storage engine, ensure that /var/lib/docker is mounted on a btrfs filesystem. Check Chapter 5 of the Oracle Linux Administrator's Solutions Guide for more details on how to create and mount btrfs filesystems.

To enable btrfs support for Docker on Oracle Linux:

  1. Ensure that /var/lib/docker is on a btrfs filesystem
  2. Edit /etc/sysconfig/docker and add "-s btrfs" to the other_args fields.
  3. Restart the Docker daemon:
    # service docker restart

Enabling and starting Docker

To enable the Docker daemon on system boot and start Docker on OL6:

# chkconfig docker on

# service docker start

To enable the Docker daemon on system boot and start Docker on OL7:

# systemctl enable docker.service

# systemctl start docker.service

Checking Docker status

To check that Docker is up and running on OL6:

# service docker status

To check that Docker is up and running on OL7:

# systemctl status docker.service

You can also get more information from Docker itself:

# docker info

# docker version

Once you have Docker up and running, follow the upstream Docker documentation to get started. 

Known Issues

Docker unmounts btrfs filesystems on shutdown

If you're running Docker using the btrfs storage engine and you stop the Docker service, it will unmount the btrfs filesystem during the shutdown process. You should ensure the filesystem is mounted properly prior to restarting the Docker service. On Oracle Linux 7, you can use a systemd.mount definition and modify the Docker systemd.service to depend on the btrfs mount defined in systemd.

SElinux support with btrfs on Oracle Linux 7

SElinux must be set to Permissive or Disabled in order to use the btrfs storage engine on Oracle Linux 7.
