Friday Spotlight: Software updates, LinuxCon, and more!

Happy Friday!

It's been a busy period here in the Oracle Linux team, so I thought I'd do a highlight post with links to some of the big things that are happening:

- LinuxCon North America starts in just 10 days, and Oracle is a sponsor. The conference features a keynote by Oracle Senior Vice President Linux and Virtualization Wim Coekaerts. If you're there, you don't want to miss it.

- Speaking of Wim and LinuxCon, there is a short video to give you a peek into what Wim will be talking about.

- We released Oracle Linux 6.7.

- We released Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 Quarterly Update 6.

There's a lot of other great stuff going on, too, from Oracle Private Cloud Appliance training, to Oracle looking for people interested in working to design and develop technical training, and a new linux.com article on sysadmin job interview questions, featuring thoughts from Oracle Linux product management.

Have a great week and we'll see you next Friday!

Wim Coekaerts is Keynote speaker at LinuxCon North America

Oracle is one of the biggest contributors to Linux but it’s also at the forefront of exploring what is possible with cloud computing and containers, including integrations with Docker and contributions to the Open Container Initiative.

This year Oracle is sponsoring LinuxCon North America and Wim Coekaerts, Sr.VP Oracle Linux and Virtualization Engineering will be keynote speaker. He will be talking at the event specifically about how the cloud revolution is changing the role of the operating system, a very relevant topic for attendees. Amanda McPherson of Linux Foundation, spoke to Wim at Oracle’s campus in Redwood Shores a few weeks ago, and in this short video preview, Wim tells if the operating system still matters in a world of virtualization and containers and how that impacts application development.

FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT: Oracle Private Cloud Appliance: Key Benefits for Partners

Oracle Private Cloud Appliance, formerly named Virtual Compute Appliance, simplifies the way customers install, deploy, and manage converged infrastructures for Linux, Windows, or Oracle Solaris applications. Oracle Private Cloud Appliance was built as a highly available system to run a range of workloads. To accomplish this, all the elements in the system are redundant, such as power, networking, compute, management & storage. All of your application services are configured in software and connected together using the built in Software Defined Network. If there is a node failure all of those services will be automatically moved to another node. Here are some key benefits for customers:

  • Turnkey cloud in a box at industry-leading price point
  • Simple path from on-premise to Oracle Cloud
  • From power-on to production in few hours
  • Enables linear scalability by adding one compute node at a time
  • Enhanced security with Oracle’s hardened software stack

It comes pre-installed with Oracle VM and Oracle VM Manager and choice of downloadable Oracle Linux, Oracle Solaris andOracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

In this blog, we specifically wanted highlight benefits to Partners. We have interviewed Rich Mason, Sr. VP Oracle Linux, Virtualization and MySQL Sales, and Wim Coekaerts, Sr. VP Oracle Linux, Virtualization Engineering, to understand some of the key benefits for partners. Watch this video to learn about how Partners can take advantage of some of the features it offers.

There are many service opportunities for partners with the Private Cloud Appliance. Here are just a few examples:

In many cases end user customers will require some assistance to migrate their existing applications to the Private Cloud Appliance, and the Reselling Partners will naturally be in a good position to offer those application migration and consolidation services. Partners can also offer VMware to Oracle VM migration services

Partners can also create software templates for their customers as well as customize Oracle VM templates for their customers’ specific workloads.  The use of templates dramatically speeds up implementation and rapid rollout of new applications and services.

By using the Oracle Enterprise Manager software that comes as part of the Private Cloud Appliance, Partners can also build and manage private cloud services to their customers.

We have seen partners using the Private Cloud Appliances for Managed Services, Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). In North America, Secure-24 and Tier1 Inc. are examples.

Visit Oracle Private Cloud Appliance website to get more details.

Friday Spotlight: The Power of The Ksplice Feature of Oracle Linux Video

Happy Friday!

I'm really excited to share this week's Friday Spotlight with you. Oracle Senior Vice President of Linux and Virtualization Wim Coekaerts sat down with Director of Product Management Michele Casey and Senior Development Manager Jamie Iles to talk about Ksplice.

In the video, they go into a lot of detail about why Ksplice is a production-ready tool for keeping systems up to date. A highlight for me is the discussion featuring a real world example of an Oracle Linux 6.2 system from 2011, and how a system like that can be patched over time with all the important CVEs and security updates without a single reboot -- no rebooting literally for years. For production systems, you can just keep the system up and running, and still be up to date. Click this screenshot to head on over to Oracle Media Network to watch the video:

We'll see you next week!

Friday Spotlight: Oracle Linux and Database Smart Flash Cache

Happy Friday!

One of the coolest, yet perhaps not best known, features of running Oracle Database and Oracle Linux together is Database Smart Flash Cache. Wim Coekaerts put it this way on his blog earlier this week:

"Basically, if you have flash devices attached to your server, you can use this flash memory to increase the size of the buffer cache. So instead of aging blocks out of the buffer cache and having to go back to reading them from disk, they move to the much, much faster flash storage as a secondary fast buffer cache (for reads, not writes)."

So, this gives you a way to significantly increase performance on your systems running the Oracle Database and Oracle Linux. How cool is that? Wim then goes on to describe the few easy steps it takes to get it up and running.

I highly recommend checking out Wim's blog entry on this fantastic feature, and there is also an in-depth white paper you can have a read through for even more info.

Have a great week!

First, the panel discussion video (video #3 in the list on the archive page) features several Oracle executives, including Oracle Senior Vice President, Linux and Virtualization, Wim Coekaerts. And last, in the Go Deep section Wim goes into detail on Oracle Linux and how it can benefit your data center.

We'll covered Engineered Systems many times on the blog, but we'll get into some detail on these new systems and Oracle Linux in future entries. In the meantime, clicking any of the pictures in this post will take you to the replay, it's exciting stuff!

We'll see you next week!
