Oracle Linux 6.1 has been released

Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 1 is now available! As usual, it is free to download, evaluate, use and distribute and we encourage you to give it a try!

Individual RPM packages are already available from our public yum server, ISO images will be on E-Delivery shortly. The source RPMs can be downloaded from http://oss.oracle.com/el6/

Like in the previous release, the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (kernel-uek-2.6.32-100.34.1.el6uek) is installed and enabled by default. If you prefer to maintain full kABI compatibility, the Red Hat compatible Kernel (kernel-2.6.32-131.0.15.el6) is installed as well and can be selected manually at boot up time or by changing the default in the GRUB configuration file.

In addition to numerous driver updates (e.g. Network, SCSI, Infiniband), the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel includes some improvements in the following areas:

  • Improved IRQ balancing
  • Reduced lock contention across the kernel to improve performance on large NUMA systems
  • Improved network I/O via receive packet steering and RDS improvements
  • Improved virtual memory performance
New: Oracle Linux 6.1 includes both a 32 bit and a 64 bit Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel.

Please check the Release Notes for a detailed description of the changes.
