Oracle Linux images for Docker released

Avi Miller
Senior Manager

The Oracle Linux team is pleased to announce an update to Docker on Oracle Linux, along with the release of official Docker images for Oracle Linux 6 and 7. With this update, customers will have access to the tools needed to create, manage and deploy Docker containers on Oracle Linux.

The Docker Engine and Official Oracle Linux images are fully supported as part of Oracle Linux Basic and Premier support subscriptions. The scope of Oracle Linux support for Docker can be found in My Oracle Support, Document ID 1921163.1.

Docker is an open platform for developers and sysadmins to build, ship, and run distributed applications. Consisting of Docker Engine, a portable, lightweight runtime and packaging tool, and Docker Hub, a cloud service for sharing applications and automating workflows, Docker enables apps to be quickly assembled from components and eliminates the friction between development, QA, and production environments. As a result, IT can ship faster and run the same app, unchanged, on laptops, data center VMs, and any cloud.

You can learn more about using Docker on Oracle Linux in the Oracle Linux Administrator's Solutions Guide for Oracle Linux 6 and the Oracle Linux Administrator's Guide for Oracle Linux 7.

You can install Docker for Oracle Linux from the Add-ons Channel for Oracle Linux 6 and 7, either via the Unbreakable Linux Network or the Oracle Linux yum sever

You can browse the available Docker Images on the Oracle Linux yum server at http://yum.oracle.com/docker-images/

Thanks Oracle and Docker. Started to experiment and https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37670_01/E37355/html/ol_docker.html is an excellent tutorial.

    Best Regards,

Thanks, Oracle Team for a good job!

Could you, please, push the containers to official public docker repo? (As others do)

  • Avi Miller Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Hey Martin, we'd love to have the Oracle Linux images on the official Docker Hub Registry and have been working through the legal issues with the Docker team for a while now. Rest assured, if it's possible, we'll do it.

Thanks for quick response! It sounds promising!

Do you have also some further plans with Docker? Some people would love to have an Oracle DB in Docker, for example :-)

  • Avi Miller Wednesday, November 19, 2014

There are lots of teams within Oracle that are very interested in Docker and the features it offers. However, I can't answer for other product teams as to what their intentions or future directions are in this space.

any updates on this, has any decisions been made to provide oracle db for docker containers by any chance.. ?

  • Avi Miller Wednesday, June 24, 2015

We've published MySQL, Oracle WebLogic and Coherence Dockerfiles over on our git repo at https://github.com/oracle/docker

WebLogic is also now certified inside a Docker container: https://blogs.oracle.com/WebLogicServer/entry/oracle_weblogic_server_now_running

I don't have any more news on Database at this stage.

    Hi Team,

Please let me know what is the root password for the Oracle Linux 7 Docker Image

  • Avi Miller Tuesday, August 18, 2015

There is no root password for the Docker images. You would need to set one manually by running passwd inside the container.

If you start bash using docker exec or docker run, it'll give you a root shell that can be used to set the password as well.

Looks like Docker 1.6 (docker-1.6.1-1.0.1.el7.x86_64) is the latest version available for OEL7. When will the Docker installation for OEL7 be updated to the latest Docker release, 1.9?

  • Avi Miller Wednesday, November 4, 2015

Actually, the latest version is 1.8.2 and the upgrade instructions can be found here: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E52668_01/E54669/html/section-fgk_llw_gt.html

As 1.9 was only released yesterday, it still has to go through extensive internal testing before we can consider releasing it publicly to our supported customers.
