The availability of free updates and errata has significantly increased the popularity of Oracle Linux. According to a recent Gartner Study from March 2013, Oracle Linux is placed in the top three
in the Linux server operating system market, growing more than 80
percent year-over-year in 2012, which outpaced the overall Linux server
operating system market growth.
This popularity was also reflected in our download numbers – recently, we were serving over 80 TB worth of data each month, and this number keeps on growing. In order to ensure continued satisfaction with this free service, we now switched the US-based public-yum.oracle.com server to use the Akamai content delivery network for distributing all the available RPM packages for Oracle Linux globally.
This increases the performance for obtaining updates and security fixes for Oracle Linux – no matter where you are in the world. With the help of the Akamai CDN, the download experience will now be similar, regardless of your geographic location.
Please note that you need to connect to the public yum service by host name. If your yum clients are configured to access the public yum server by its public IP address, you won't benefit from increase in performance, as Akamai uses DNS to redirect the load. Please check your configurations accordingly!

The T10 PI data integrity demonstration features the Fusion ION Data
Accelerator shared storage solution with Oracle Linux and Emulex Gen 5 FC HBAs. The demonstration incorporates Oracle
Linux with the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, which supports integrity features
that leverage the T10 PI specification.
The data integrity testing was conducted by inserting corrupt data into the system and verifying that despite the insertions, data integrity on ION Data Accelerator was not compromised. Using the T10 PI specification, data corruption is noticed and fixed as it is written to shared storage, helping ensure reliability for enterprise applications. The demonstration incorporates Oracle Linux with the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, which supports integrity features that leverage the T10 PI specification. Additional technical details about the T10 PI reliability demo are available here.

This is an exciting development for Oracle customers because it gives them more choice in how they want to deploy their Oracle software, including Oracle Applications, Oracle Database, and more, with Oracle VM and Oracle Linux. The combination is especially interesting in small to medium sized businesses for a number of reasons.
First, there is an extremely low barrier to entry. With zero license cost for Oracle VM and Oracle Linux, there are never any upfront fees to take into consideration. This helps small to medium sized businesses do all of their architecting, testing, and even implementation without needing to worry about license fees. Another factor that reduces the barrier to entry isOracle VM Templates. There are over 100 of these ready to run virtual machines, pre-tested, pre-configured with popular Oracle software requiring near-zero OS, or application knowledge, ready to deploy from point of download. For SMB’s with slim IT resources, Oracle VM Templates help to radically reduce deployment time so companies can focus on growing their business.
The last piece of the puzzle for small and medium sized businesses is affordable support costs. With some of the lowest support costs in the industry, if a customer chooses to purchase support for their deployment, they are assured of a low cost, high value investment. Affordable support costs paired with zero license fees means that overall costs stay incredibly low.
And now, all of this is certified for use on Lenovo’s ThinkServer Systems!
When you look at these factors, the combination of Lenovo ThinkServer Systems and Oracle VM and Oracle Linux is a very compelling option.
integrity solution announced today by Huawei, in collaboration with Emulex, and
Oracle enhances the current technology where hosts and storage systems protect
data integrity independently. This is done by implementing E2E data integrity
protection across applications, hosts, storage systems, and disks. As a result,
this solution can help prevent silent data corruption in mission-critical
services and eliminate potential downtime, which may cost organizations
millions of dollars in revenue.
Huawei Global Certification Test Center (GCTC)
has qualified this solution, including: Oracle Database, Oracle Linux with the
Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, Emulex Gen5 FC HBA, and HUAWEI OceanStor
Enterprise Storage System, and confirmed that these components are
compatible with industry specifications such as the SCSI Protection Information
Model (T10 PI) and Data Integrity Extensions (DIX). HUAWEI OceanStor Enterprise
Storage System supports standard T10 PI, which can detect and resolve the
silent data corruption. It also provides PI interface to host, and supports
assorting with the DIX.

One key reason customers choose Oracle
Linux is the investment Oracle makes in optimizing Linux for demanding
workloads. Part of this work includes extensive testing for I/O intensive
workloads, like the Oracle Database. A
common test used at Oracle to measure I/O throughput and performance is the
Oracle Orion Calibration Tool, which simulates the I/O workloads of an Oracle
Database. Recently, the Oracle Linux
team discovered a significant lag in I/O performance, which was later traced to
a feature in the Linux kernel, Transparent Huge Pages (also known as THP). During these tests, our engineering teams
discovered THP introduced a 30% performance degradation in I/O throughput. When Transparent Huge Pages were removed from
the kernel, performance values returned to their expected levels.
Our engineers have been working with the
community to identify the root cause of this performance problem, which also
impacts other projects, such as Hadoop. Oracle’s
kernel engineers have traced the performance issues with Transparent Huge Pages
to its use of swappable hugepages. Prior
to THP, hugepages were not swappable. It
appears the overhead generated by this implementation is the root cause of the deterioration
seen in performance when the feature is enabled (compiled) in the kernel. Our kernel engineers are working on several
changes to the code which they believe will improve performance with THP, but
the final resolution will take time to develop, test and release.
Due to the impact this feature has on
performance with applications like the Oracle Database and the timing of a
final fix, Oracle Linux will disable Transparent Huge Pages in the Unbreakable
Enterprise Kernel, beginning with Quarterly Update 5 for the Unbreakable
Enterprise Kernel, Release 2 (version 2.6.39-400.209.1). To maintain binary compatibility with the
Red Hat distribution, the Red Hat Compatible kernel will be left as is, with
Transparent Huge Pages enabled. In
addition, the Oracle Database team has released an alert recommending all customers disable THP in
all Linux systems running RAC and even those systems running single instances,
due to instability. Please note that THP is not used by the Oracle Database, the recommendation is to use huge pages. Additional information for huge pages can be found in your Oracle Database documentation or on My Oracle Support.
Our engineers will continue to work with
others in the community on a final resolution to the performance issues seen
with Transparent Huge Pages. Once a fix is available, we will re-enable this feature in the Unbreakable Enterprise
We are pleased to announce the availability of the 5th quarterly update update release for the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 2 (version 2.6.39-400.209.1) for Oracle Linux 5 and Oracle Linux 6. This release includes driver updates as well as a consolidation of bug fixes and security updates.
Notable changes include:
Xsigo virtual host adapter and network drivers to support Oracle SDN (Software Defined Network), previously known as Xsigo Fabric Accelerator.
LSI Fusion-MPT SAS 3.0 driver to support up to 12 Gb/s host controllers.
XEN improvements, such as the indirect-descriptor feature, which increases throughput and reduces latency for block I/O.
Binary RPMs can be downloaded and installed using yum from the Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) as well as Oracle's public-yum server. The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is installed and booted by default on Oracle Linux. See this article on Oracle Technology Network for details on how to install and update the kernel.

This presentation is about using kernel code in userspace. The presentation will revolve about sharing actual kernel code beyond just headers with userspace, the pros and cons of doing so, and present work in progress of projects which aim to make it happen. I will demonstrate existing projects such as liblockdep which build userspace libraries from kernel code, and propose directions for future work. The presentation will also address the resentment of including userspace code in the kernel tree and will propose alternatives to that.
The target audience is quite wide as the presentation is aimed both at kernel and userspace hackers. The audience can expect both theoretical overview about how to use kernel code in userspace and practical examples of doing so. The presentation will provide tools and methods to use more kernel code in userspace and will clearly show the benefit of doing so.
2) PC BIOS, EFI and Other wild animals in the Wild - Speaker: Daniel Kiper, Oracle
Tuesday September 17, 2013 5:10pm - 6:00pm
Room: Celestin A
Firmware is crucial part of almost every hardware. Very often it is not visible to the user. However, there are firmwares which are known better than the others. Especially PC BIOS and recently EFI is quite visible. There are also some replacements for them like coreboot which takes more and more supporters. This presentation will show a history of their development, main features and differences. Also, it will show how to test some of them without access to the special hardware and uncommon tools.
This presentation is targeted to developers and administrators. They should know the machine boot sequence, when firmware is involved during the system startup and run as well as when its code is deliberately omitted. It will help them to understand the main PC BIOS, EFI and coreboot features and drawbacks.
