This week I had to do a road trip from Washington down to Richmond. It was a beautiful day for a road trip. Left the house way early so I was in old geiser mode. Meaning in no particular hurry. Although on I-95 I thought I was going to be mowed down by little old ladies giving the gesture.
I set the cruise and set about to enjoy the ride. My side mission was to see what kind of mileage the car would get just cruising along. It pulled 31.5 mpg on the highway. So yes I know that Prius and a host of other small cars will kick my butt. The surprising part is the car is a BMW 328ci. It is not a new car. It is a model year 2000. Eight years old and it gets incredible mileage on the highway. Not bad in mixed traffic either. Averages about 24 mpg. This is a car that keeps growing on me.
Every so often I get that urge to get a new car. But when I look at the type of car I would love to buy I cannot get beyond the fact the similar new cars to mine get less miles per gallon than I am getting from a eight year old car. Yes they are more powerful but I do not get to the track at all these days to be able to exploit that power. My inner driving demon would love it but my sensible side says no let someone else get the tickets.
Then I add in the fact that premium in this area is around 4.15 per gallon. Mid grade is 4.09. It is outrageous. So maybe the next car will not be a 4 door all wheel drive speed machine. It just might turn out to be a Smart, Prius and yet to be discovered mode of transport.
