Can a geek be green ?

I am sitting here thinking about the "eco" movement we seem to be entering. Very slowly that is. I think the country will be forced into thinking green. But it will be painful for most. They will not change on their own accord without motivation.

I am looking around surveying the servers I have sitting in my home office. Now very few are on at any given time. I have a few sitting around when I need to prepare for customer demos. I have a desktop and server consuming power 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Laptop is powered down at night. Until this day I have never asked why ? It is just they way it happened.

Interesting enough I went through the home and changed the light bulbs to save energy but never questioned two computers running 24/7. The more I look around the home office, I see routers/switches, UPS systems, KVM switches and various AC convertors to charge the multitude of portable devices I own. All devouring power 24/7.

I bet this single room is consuming 60% of all my power needs. Needs is definitely the wrong word. What can go ? What should be powered down ? Is there a better way to charge all of my devices without them being plugged in 24/7 ?

I think it is time to question my "needs".
