links for 2008-11-17: StarOffice 9 Released, Norway using OpenOffice

  • StarOffice 9 Now Shipping - Now includes native Mac OS X support. Time to switch from NeoOffice?
  • Sun adds Apple native support to StarOffice 9 - Larry comments on the news saying "My hunch is that StarOffice could find some SMB momentum on the Mac platform. Microsoft Office is costly, Apple’s counterparts aren’t an exact substitute and that void may leave an opening for StarOffice."
  • Norway encourages use of open source software - "Minister of Government Administration and Reform Heidi Grande Roeys said she was granting 2 million kroner ($285,000) to the national center for free software to adapt and promote OpenOffice for such government use as public reports, accounting and archives."

OpenOffice Writer for Blogging

I recently blogged about wanting an easy way to convert an OpenOffice text document to wiki format. I haven't found a good solution yet, but also decided to look into using OpenOffice to do my blog authoring.

What I've been using is just the web-based tool available as part of Roller and that works fine but I thought it was time I looked for something more sophisticated.

What I found was the Sun Weblog Publisher but alas I discovered it presently doesn't work on Intel based Mac's.

If someone know of another option, let me know!

OpenOffice Writer to Wiki Converter

As noted in an earlier blog entry, I was at a Gartner conference this week, and I attempted to take decent notes for each session I attended. The convenient way to do this was to use NeoOffice (OpenOffice) and at the end of the conference I had several pages of notes which was great.

However, we use wikis pretty extensively to collaborate within Sun and I wanted to get my notes into wiki format and had to do it the hard way (copy paste the text in and add wiki formatting).

What would have been great is to have a Save As or Export to wiki format available right there in OpenOffice. I did a bit of searching and didn't seem to find anything but if anyone has any pointers, please share.

I did manage to find a number of tools for converting HTML to wiki format and so that might be an option (save as to HTML then convert) and I'll try some of them out (and if anyone has any pointers for the best tool for that, please share), but I would have thought someone would have created the more elegant solution already.

StarOffice In-Flight

I just saw this blog about Singapore Airlines offering StarOffice as part of the in-flight entertainment system. It's a great idea, and I only wish they would have had it a year ago when I had the opportunity to enjoy 20 hours of flying (one-way) on one of their planes!
