A BlackBerry without BES

I wrote about switching to Thunderbird a few days ago and mentioned I was going to be getting set up with my mobile device too. Well, doing that was pretty painless.

I have been a BlackBerry user for several years, using a 7100g and this worked great as SeeBeyond had a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. I had push e-mail and calendar synching so I was set. As we switched away from Exchange BES would no longer be an option, but thankfully another option appeared.

Notify Technologies has a product, NotifyLink, that provides for push based e-mail and calendar synching without BES. I went ahead and got setup with it and things pretty much just worked!

It did install a new mail client on the BB rather than integrating with the built-in client, but the calendar does sync with the built in calendar. Not sure why it is this way but I set my BB up to be able to easily get to the mail client so it works fine for me.

So, now that I have this working I'll probably delay getting a new device. I had been looking at a Nokia E62 or Treo 680 when I thought I'd need to use an IMAP e-mail client, but now that I have this working I may look at a BB Pearl when I grow tired of my 7100g. Of course, the iPhone is coming soon too...
