On the eastern edge of the bay in downtown San Francisco lies one of the best restaurants in the world
called the Slanted Door. Located in the recently refurbished Ferry Building, Chef Charles Phan has
been cooking up some radically delicious foods from Vietnam from the mission to south beach to it's current
location at the Pier.
After a walk by the anti-bush rally after work at Union Square, a seemingly daily occurence these days,
I figured I'd drop in and say hello to my friend Bill and have a few tasty items off the bar menu
and mingle with The People. It's been a regular stop for family and friends since it's arrival in the mission
district years ago. It's one of those places you just can't go wrong.
Talented people are everywhere in San Francisco. Artists, musicians, financiers, technologists and
ornithologists amongst many others make up a soup of intrigue which tonight was accompanied
by a live scallop and maine prawn salad, vientamese sea bass and kale dinner with a marguerita chaser.
And so it was that I happened to find myself tonight next to two talented sisters enjoying a set of
spring rolls and oysters and talking about a day in the life. Claire is a lawyer and also gives her
support in many other ways to sister Courtney's new business venture as a Sommelier amongst
other things. For those outside of France, everyone can check our her website and learn more about
not only what a Sommelier does but also all the other cool things her company does. Check it out at:
After a great Tawny Port and trying to get over Courtney's sea blue eyes, it was time to head out down
the Embarcadero along the water back towards South Beach to relax and laugh my head off at another
edition of American Idol, one of the very few shows I enjoy on television, especially the early auditions.
As an aspriing and perpetual amateur guitarist, i share the hope and spirit in their eyes while quickly realizing
that not many people are aretha franklin, alicia keys or a Bocelli. Fortunately, my 57 goldtop Les
Paul always seems to sound like God smiling at me when I get home, plug-in and play the blues.
So, if you visit San Francisco soon, check out the Slanted Door and Courtney's new business venutre
as she has class, talent and a passion, like Charles Phan, for spending your time on earth with purpose.
