Sun Open Source Co-lab for Education

Kevin Roebuck
Director, Digital Experience

While Curriki, Archive.org, Merlot and the Hewlett Foundation explore and develop open content, it looks like there is some funding available and interest to establish a Sun co-op lab with a University partner to drive open source software development for Education. The suggestion box is open for proposals at e-Learning@sun.com. Some target platforms and charter would include:

On the Educational applications side:

  • Sakai
  • Moodle
  • Pachyderm
  • Fedora
  • D-Space
  • Open source student system
  • Kuali
  • uPortal
  • OSPI
  • OKI

And on the Sun side:

  • Opensolaris
  • Openjava
  • Netbeans
  • ID access manager/federation
  • portlet repository
  • Jini
  • jxta
  • OpenOffice
  • Glassfish
  • Open Media Commons
  • Grid Engine
  • Brazil

We just re-signed for another year with IMS so we would want to promote open specs around inter-operability as a foundation.
