After a lot of money and time spent making the next great open source learning management system, Sakai struggled a bit in the past few years with usability albeit during a time of great advances in the era of Web 2.0. However, things are looking up as Sakai 3.0 is just around the corner with some nice new direction and feature for the Java-based platform. We're going to put some engineering effort into it along with our partnership with the guys at Unicon for implementations. In the meantime, Michael's new Sakai 3 whitepaper is a good read to get a sense where things are going now. With some interest brewing for a Wonderland bridge, Sakai 3.0 could be a very compelling platform direction for open source learning in 2009 in both 2-D and 3-D!
