Common Cartridge

Kevin Roebuck
Director, Digital Experience

Delivering and extending digital content across the various flavors or learning management systems is a key challenge for both publishers and end users in higher education. Today, systems such as Sakai, Moodle, Angel, Desire2Learn or blackboard all use particular proprietary hooks to bind content to their execution engines. So, content providers must build, test and distribute their content individually for each platform. This
duplication of effort increases both production time and costs.

The IMS Common Cartridge initiative is a key element of the future digital content sharing across platforms.
The Common
Cartridge will define a commonly supported content format, able to run on any
compliant LMS platform. It will enable content providers to achieve lower
production costs while expanding the effective market by eliminating platform
dependency. This will both stimulate production by larger content providers and
open up the market to smaller publishers. The LMS providers in turn,
will have a stronger business case to take to their customers, as schools,
colleges, universities, training departments and certification programs will
have available a broader catalog of offerings reaching deeper into the
curriculum.
