Exploring Mobility, Chatbots, Blockchain and Augmented Reality solutions in the Cloud to re-imagine Education & Research

Cinegrid

Kevin Roebuck
Director, Digital Experience

Another example today of a grid-powered digital media network service to render everything from films, to virtual worlds, games, simulations, animations, commerce and education in the immersion space. This one is called Cinegrid. Nice folks there and it looks like some very interesting collab spaces with mediagrid, wonderland, darkstar and streamstar. I signed up for membership at hit the 2007 annual conference in sunny san diego. I love those short flights.

I went through everything I could find on the net which related to CineGrid, and all I understood from it was that CineGrid is just another High bandwidth Content Distribution Network (CDN), largely based on the assumption that utilizing multi-Gigabit optics will be economical in the near future.

One question, though; Why would they call it a "GRID"? Well you could say CDNs are mostly utilizing P2P technology and P2P systems have alot in common with Grids (especially when dealing with

organizing resource sharing) but is there a more expressive reason for classifying it as a GRID?

Good points. I'll attend their conference and see if there's any value for academia in their approach. More later. thanks. - K
