Yesterday a few family members and I were guests at Lucasfilm's Letterman Center for the Digital Arts as part of a tour arranged by UC Berkeley and the Pacific Film Archive. It's truly an amazing place centered at the intersection of storytelling and digital technology. They have a render-farm with 6,000 Dual-core AMD systems along with a SETI-like software environment that uses compute cycles from employee's systems when not in use. After a preview short film on the history of film in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Lucasfilm clip shown at Siggraph this year, we wandered through ILM to see just what it's like, at least for a few minutes, to work in a magical place that makes dreams come to life. My wife clipped a short video together on the day and a few photos to share too. The best was getting to stop by the Lucas store and pick up a cool sweatshirt from the Skywalker Ranch Fire Dept and an Industrial Light & Magic shirt to take home from the day. Thanks Barbara, Lynn and Myles for everything and see you at the movies.
