I'm constantly reminded how the SFW consolidation model is such a prototypical cathedral... components arrive through careful orchestration, highly serialized, all funneled into the same repository. All are built together in lockstep, delivered biweekly in one big ball up the chain, combined with other consolidations and eventually much later made available to the masses from the balcony.
(Too bad I can't draw or there would be a good opportunity for a fun cartoon here ;-)
Which is not to say this cathedral model is necessarily wrong. For some things (say, ON) it does seem quite applicable. On the other hand, the goal of SFW is to make available an inherently decentralized set of components: assorted open source packages delivered [mostly] as-is from their respective communities into OpenSolaris.
So there lies our challenge.. how to break down the cathedral walls of SFW and convert it into the bazaar model?
