Consolidation Cathedral

I'm constantly reminded how the SFW consolidation model is such a prototypical cathedral... components arrive through careful orchestration, highly serialized, all funneled into the same repository. All are built together in lockstep, delivered biweekly in one big ball up the chain, combined with other consolidations and eventually much later made available to the masses from the balcony.

(Too bad I can't draw or there would be a good opportunity for a fun cartoon here ;-)

Which is not to say this cathedral model is necessarily wrong. For some things (say, ON) it does seem quite applicable. On the other hand, the goal of SFW is to make available an inherently decentralized set of components: assorted open source packages delivered [mostly] as-is from their respective communities into OpenSolaris.

So there lies our challenge.. how to break down the cathedral walls of SFW and convert it into the bazaar model?

Comments:

You can't, the Cathedral model is appropriate for the SFW consolidation as well. Remember the SFW consolidation is delivered as a component to the distribution in exactly the same manner as ON is, and as such is expected to be integrated and tested in the same manner and each component incurs a fairly high cost for support. What is needed is another consolidation of loosely integrated components that that are ported but not supported except by the community. In that case, each component would be separately deliverable.

A big problem we have right now is that the SFW consolidation is trying to be both. That needs to stop.

Indeed, that's a good point. Currently SFW is trying to fulfill the role of making a broad set of open source packages available and the consolidation model is inappropriate and unable to scale. While one option is to change SFW to meet the requirements you're quite correct that another option is to simply move the ball elsewhere - leaving SFW as a delivery mechanism for the few dozen highly stable open source components and deliver everything else from a new unnamed unconsolidation...
