Today The Sun will Rise

Today as the Sun comes up, we as Sun employees are likely to have our last day as part of the greatest technology company the world has ever seen. I know that all of us will do the right thing and how we behave reflects the legacy of Sun Microsystems. Today our Leader set the tone and I want to publicly Thank Scott for the years of leadership he has shown us all. ( who doesn't have a Scott story ) The thing that we all learned from Scott is was what courage is all about. He pushed us and challenged us all to ask the hard questions, create technology, or not accept the the established answer.  24 yr 4 months and 10 days ago ( I missed 25 yrs, the EU came back to fast )  when I joined Sun I never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to be part of this amazing experience to really effect the world forever. I remember clearly after my first week at Sun telling my wife, do not plan on me staying here more than 6 months these people are crazy!

It wasn't crazy it was pure genius ! Let's not forget Sun made systems and operating systems open. We defined open systems in a world where closed and controlled was the standard of doing business. We did opensource before anybody had ever heard the word. We called it NFS !! ( connect-a-thon ) We made window systems truely functional we called that SunView! We opened the world to the idea that Unix could solve business problems. We called that SunOS and later Solaris ! We said chips companies should have competition and RISC made more sense. We called that SPARC ! We said that applications should not be locked to the OS and processor. We called that Java ! ( well Oak at first) The list goes on and on!! We can all agree being part of this is a once in a lifetime experience and one that has effected all of us. No matter what happens tomorrow all of us ( past and present employees) proudly say we where part of Sun and we changed the world. We will all take what we have learned and experienced into our next jobs, challenges, or whatever you choose to do. My family and I have grown and benefited from our time at Sun, this is something that I can not thank you all enough for. To my Sun family past and present, today when the Sun comes up be proud and show the courage that is our legacy. One thing no one can ever take away from you is YOU ARE ALWAYS A PART OF THE SUN FAMILY! All the best and thank you!

Truly, well said. It is a matter of pride to be part of the SUN family.

Ditto. I find it funny that folks outside Sun don't quite understand the concept of using work and family in the same sentence. The Sun family is truly like no other. Ironically, today is my 11 year anniversary with Sun. :-)

The success you listed starts with leadership - and a lot of it from you. As somebody who's worked in your group for a long time, you've made Sun a very special place. I've personally learned a ton from you, much of what I do on a daily basis starts with, "How would Jim handle this?"

The perfect sentiment. Great post Jim.

Agreed fully. The constants to count on at Sun have always been change, innovation, growth, humor and fun times -- good qualities for a family I will always treasure.

No matter where our future road takes us individually, it's great to know that we former Sun employees can still count on each other no matter how much time passes by or by how many miles separate us. The military philosophy of "Never leave your wing-man" is another positive Sun trait I will always display.

JP well said! You're the best and I continue to grow as a person with your wonderful words of, well, wisdom! My Sun stories are part of who I am and the many friendships that developed thru the years because of it. A truly crazy and wonderful company I hope can be recreated one day for others to experience!

Very well said. The nine years I spent at Sun were the most enjoyable of my career. Working with such talented people was a real honor and the personal growth that I experienced was phenominal.
While a company can never give you a hug after a tough day, it's sad to think that the organization we all put so much energy and passion into no longer exists.
Thankfully, we all have some very fond memories and friendships that resulted in our brief time together.
