Enhancements of the NetBeans Output view

... or rather "Finally, a font size can be configured for Output view"?

Today, I was sitting in my office with Tomas Holy, a dev guy who was responsible for the Output view (the view where build output is written, for example). We were chatting for a while as we needed to relax a bit after the hard labor we do.

I suddenly recalled a very commonly heard RFE's:

"Thomas, you know what you should implement? Settings for the font size in the Output view..."

Tomas's reply was plain as usual - with his traditionally bored voice he said:

"Yeah, it is already there..."

He was right, it really showed up in NetBeans 6.7... Those are great news for many people (especially for teachers/professors who use NB IDE at their lessons).

So currently, you can right-click the output window a do quite a lot of cool stuff, such as:

  • Resize the font (Ctrl+MouseWheel works as well)
  • Change a font ("wrapping mode" must be disabled)
  • Set a filter for the output lines (so that only lines matching a regexp can be shown, for example)
The new Output view

Furthermore, Tomas told me he did some rather major enhancements regarding the search functionality (in the Output window), therefore the search should be much faster and should be more memory efficient. I bet everyone has noticed better coloring of the text output...

I hope you will be happy of this enhancement as much as I am! :)

Comments:

It almost looks like you are using a substance laf.

Are you running on linux or solaris?

Never mind, I just read further down and found the Dark Wave on ubuntu entry. Ooops!

Yes, it is "new wave" but thanx for a suggestion for the new L&F (Substance) ;)...

Does the Output window inherit its font settings from the Options dialog settings? If it doesn't, then is there a way to set the font without right-clicking in the Output area?

Hi Zian!

The default font for the output view is inherited from the swing look and feel (defaults to Monospaced 11 on my PC). If you start IDE with the command-line switch "--fontsize 16", the fonts will be bigger everywhere (=also in the Output view).

Once you set the font properties of the Output view using the right-click (this is the only place where you can do it now, AFAIK), the configuration is made persistent = it is stored in your userdir, specifically in:

$HOME/.netbeans/$VERSION/config/Preferences/org/netbeans/core/output2.properties
/output2.properties

Kind regards,

Petr Dvorak

Can one change the encoding of the output tabs?

I am printing Greek using system.out.println but I can not see then on the output console. I get "?" on every greek character.
Tried changing the encoding of the project to win1253, as well as UTF8, but it does not work.

Thanks
Manolis

Would be nice to choose if we want the "Warnings" to show, this is sometimes a pain to cipher thru all the output.

The Filter is ok if your looking for specific stuff, but i would want the VM to be silent to be able to see my output of my app.

If i have missed somewhere i can remove the unwanted stuff from VM please tell me. I checked on google and no luck..
