Hackathon time @ BOSUG

The preparatory workshop for the BeleniX hackathon was held last saturday. We had 8 students and 6 developers who attended. We hope to have a few more for the actual event.

Even if we have 10 people for the hackathon who can finish 10 spec files each, we would have made a \*massive\* contribution of 100 spec files to the OpenSolaris spec files repository.

Way to go BOSUG-ians!

BOSUG-ian at JavaONE

Sriram Narayanan - a very active BOSUG member and BeleniX developer is a speaking at CommunityONE on May 7th.

Here is the note from him that went out on the bosug alias.

Hello everyone !

I didn't want to announce this until I was really all set to go.

I'm speaking at the Javaone (actually, at something called
CommunityOne - day before the main Javaone events start). I'm leaving
tonight for San Francisco.

I'm speaking on the same topic that I'd spoken on at the Sun Tech Days
at Hyderabad earlier this year.

A lot of thanks from me to Sun India and to Joe in particular.

So, folks, wish me luck ! I'll be back sometime in May.

-- Sriram

Wishing you a great time Sriram! Keep the BOSUG flag flying very high!

'Linux For You' magazine is shipping with Solaris Express Dev Edition in May

Yippee!

'Linux For You' - one of the popular linux magazines in India is carrying Solaris Express Developer Edition in its May issue. Ananth Shrinivas has authored an article on installing SXDE as well.

Linux For You has a circulation of over 40,000! That many linux geeks (or possibly more), get a chance to give Solaris a whirl.

My heatfelt thanks to Jaijit, Ananth, Sam, Jaggy, Savitha and Anu for making this happen.

Hackathon@BOSUG

I \*love\* this idea from Shiv - BOSUG member for the next meeting. It is a \*Hackathon\*!

How does the idea of a hackathon @ one of the bosug meets sound.

1.
One or two people already working on their projects do some ground
work, the overall design is known. Coding, low level design are to be
done - these are identified.

2. Identify the set of interested volunteers
3. On the decided
day, the guys working on the project give an opening brief to the
participating members. Set of "to be done" tasks are decided.

4. By the end of 2-3 hours, take the tasks to completion

5. Another half an hour to integrate the work of different people

Since bosug meets have wider audience, this need not be in lieu of the meet. It can happen just before the meet(managing logistics on the meet day is easier).

If not projects this can also be done for bugs. Identify a
pool of bugs to work on and fix a sizeable number of non-trivial bugs.

3-4 connected systems would be required. If this is difficult to arrange, we can manage with laptops and usb sticks.

The idea is to
- give good momentum to a work that is already being done.
- makes it easier for people interested in contributing
- HAVE FUN.

Any other ideas / thoughts are welcome.

~Shiv
