Modal En-chant-ment

Last night we went to listen to Early Music performed by the Ensemble Cantus Modalis at St. Cosmae. They sang music from the 15th and 16th centuries, often alternatim with the great 1674 Huss/Schnitger organ of St Cosmae.

This concert was a great experience. After a while the slowish tempo of the music takes hold of the listener and makes this a meditating experience. The singers are specially trained to perform music of that time and their technique produces a special tone, that is very different from classical or most modern music. I had never really appreciated this special color when listening to recordings, but in this live performance it was apparent right away. The organ fit very well with the choir sound in the quieter, woodwind registrations, though at times, when adding more registers, it became a bit too loud for my taste.

Of course we took a recording of the choir (the complete musical works of Christiaan van der Ameyden) back home.
