When Uma B. interacted with a computer for the very first time in her life, she knew she wanted to become a software engineer. “I started thinking into which university I wanted to enroll, and how to achieve it,” she remembers. After graduating from Anna University’s College of Engineering, Uma worked in India for 3 years. Afterwards, New York University admitted her to pursue a Master’s in Computer Science. She then moved to Seattle, where she worked for 7 years before joining Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
Now a Principal Member of Technical Staff, Uma works on Resource Manager, which allows customers to automate the process of provisioning their OCI resources. “When I joined the team, Resource Manager was still a proof of concept,” she explains. “I got an exciting opportunity to design and implement a major performance improvement feature, which reduced jobs’ latency from 5 minutes to 5 seconds. This dramatic improvement in performance helped get more customers to adopt Resource Manager for infrastructure provisioning.”
Joining OCI because of its startup-like atmosphere, and because of the opportunity to work on a product from scratch, Uma cherishes every moment she spends here: “There’s always something new to learn; there’s always a bigger challenge to face; there’s always a great team that has your back and helps you in every way possible to learn.” She adds, “Seattle is an amazing place for cloud engineers. With so many companies giving a wide range of openings, it’s a great place to learn from each other.”
Yet, from this abundance of opportunities, Uma decided to join Oracle because of the breaks and experience she couldn’t gain from other companies. “Oracle gave me the chance to present at OpenWorld 2019, where I spoke about Resource Manager in front of customers from all over the world,” she shares. “I’m lucky to be part of a dynamic, agile, friendly, and helpful team, which is a highly diverse mixture of people from other cloud providers/companies, so there are always occasions to learn from each other’s experience.”
