GVD Oracle Italy: Food for the Poor

In the frame of the Global Volunteer Days, Oracle Italy employees participated in supporting the “Banco Alimentare” food bank. Volunteers spent their time aiding the collection and distribution of food for poor people.

Banco Alimentare is member of the Italian Banco Alimentare Network, an organization with over 1,000 volunteers which collects still perfectly edible food which, having lost commercial value, would otherwise be destroyed. These foodstuffs originate from the food industry, organized large-scale retail trade, and collective catering services – by recovering them they become a richness for those who have too little.

Oracle Italy colleagues answered the call with great enthusiasm, the number of volunteers exceeding the maximum number of available places. They helped in checking sell-by dates and preparing boxes to be distributed to the local ONG...

GVD Poland – Painting the Orphanage

This time our colleague Robert Harris wrote a short article about the #Oraclevolunteers in Poland and the support they gave to the Dom Dziecka nr 9 orphanage located in Warsaw.

Last autumn, during Global Volunteer Days our employees from Poland spent the day painting and redecorating the hall, the main space where children, staff and guests move through every day.

Nine #Oraclevolunteers spent a couple of hours on this activity – getting the paint on before the children returned from school! It was a great opportunity to integrate during the work and later on when eating a delicious dinner served by the orphanage’s canteen.

GVD Oracle Ireland: Treasure Hunting for Charity

On the 25th of October volunteers from Oracle Ireland took part in an event to raise money for the non-profit organization Variety, the Children’s Charity. The charity is dedicated to improving the lives of sick disabled and disadvantaged children in Ireland and donates wheelchairs through its Mobility Program.

Oracle’s sponsored Treasure Hunt was specifically aimed at providing a wheelchair for a little girl, 14 years old and diagnosed with McCune Albright Syndrome. Because of this rare and little understood syndrome she went through precocious puberty, meaning she went from baby to adult, with all the physical changes that come with that, with no child or adolescent stages in between.

From the age of 3 the little girl has spent most her life in and out of hospitals, and her health will worsen as she gets older. The Electrical Wheelchair will allow her to enjoy simple pleasures with her family, such as more mobility out of doors.

The Treasure Hunt gathered 23 volunteers who were grouped in teams of four or five and accumulated points by answering questions that involved visiting places all over the city...

Oracle South Africa’s smallest office, in Durban, spent Global Volunteers Day helping the Food Bank South Africa, a registered agency that focuses on addressing food insecurity in South Africa. Volunteers contributed food items including 270 kg of rice and 144 x 400 g canned fish. The agency sees to it that the food is distributed appropriately to the various needy communities – schools, pre schools, old age homes, drop in centres, HIV and Aids centers. GVD United Kingdom: Clearing Gorse for the National Trust

As part of Oracle’s Global Volunteer Days initiative, a group of almost 50 Oracle UK employees with family and friends travelled down to Corfe Castle in Dorset to help the National Trust clear an area of gorse. The project was organised by Carole Speed, Linux, Virtualization and MySQL GBU.

The host Ranger from the National Trust explained that Heathland is a manmade landscape, created by the earliest stone age farmers and maintained by grazing and wood cutting throughout the years. The aim of this project was to continue this traditional form of management by clearing an area of scrub and gorse to allow regeneration of the purple heather for which the heaths are renowned.

After the safety briefing and a round of bacon sandwiches the Oracle team set to work – sawing, lopping and dragging the gorse to create a huge bonfire. It’s amazing what a large group of enthusiastic volunteers can achieve...[Read More]

GVD Nigeria – Gift of life

Nigeria is one of the many countries where #Oraclevolunteers are agents of change in their community. This new article by Robert Harris shows the contribution they have made to the society in 2013: GVD Nigeria – Gift of life.

Oracle Nigeria’s first Global Volunteer Days activity involved a blood drive in favor of the Lagos State Government Blood Transfusion Committee.

“It was fantastic initiative,” said Ihuoma Okoroafor, CSR Coordinator Nigeria. “At first people were a bit uncertain about donating but after the health talk that the Lagos state officials gave prior to the commencement of the donation, all doubts were cleared.”

The volunteers got to see the bigger picture and embraced the joy of knowing that this was not just about giving blood, but in fact it was giving to someone...

In October volunteers from Oracle Germany’s Potsdam office hosted a Fall Festival for the Red Cross Children’s Home Kinderheim am Stern. Oracle Potsdam has a long standing relationship with this orphanage, just as Oracle Munich has similar ties to local children’s homes.

The 15 volunteers spent many hours playing with the children and also livened up the garden with a dozen craftily carved pumpkin heads. Oracle and the children also prepared the garden for the spring, planting seedlings and cleaning weeds...

Movember is an annual charity campaign which asks men to grow a moustache throughout the month of November to raise money and awareness for men’s health. It specifically funds programmes for testicular and prostate cancer and the men who are affected by the disease...

Oracle’s First Ever GAA Team Wins Dublin GAA Inter-Firms Championship

Oracle’s first ever GAA Team recently beat off serious competition to win the Dublin GAA Inter-Firms Championship recently. The unusual GAA Team consisted of non-irish players who had previously no experience in playing Ireland’s indigenous sport.

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is an Irish amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused mainly on promoting Gaelic games such as hurling, gaelic football and camogie.

Despite the fact that the #Oracleteam were newcomers to the game, having only been set up in the past few months, the team saw off the competition from other well-seasoned firms such as ESB, Deloitte, Media Gaels and Citi Group.

The team which was founded by Stephen Twomey, Colm Bermingham and Tony Dunne from the Business Development Group in Oracle Direct started off with 4 people...

960 students ‘crouched’, ‘touched’ and ‘set’ under the watchful eye of International Rugby Referee Alain Roland, and supported by Oracle employees, to successfully set a new world record for the World’s Largest Scrum to raise funds and awareness for the Irish Youth Foundation.

Last year Oracle Employees supported the Irish Youth Foundation by donating funds from their payroll through the Giving Tree Appeal. To acknowledge our generosity the IYF asked Oracle employees to participate in their most recent campaign which was to break the Guinness Book of Records by forming the World’s Largest Rugby Scrum. This was a wonderful opportunity for us to promote the charity, support education and to make a mark in the Corporate Social Responsibility field.
