What makes the perfect service operations engineer? Anthony Garcia, service operations manager for Oracle National Security Regions Operations, is on the hunt for energetic employees that can help his team provide cutting-edge customer solutions. Read his Q&A to find out if you’re exactly what he’s calling out for.
Tell us about your team and what they do.
As one of the first unified Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) operations teams, our primary remit is to act as tier one and two support for over 200 Oracle services. We currently operate on a 24/5 basis with plans to have a full body of staff for 24/7 support, when external customer workload is added.
What is your long-term vision for your team?
My team is mostly filled with junior employees who operate as tier one support. Our long-term vision for developing these personnel, is to iterate a pipeline that transitions upwards, and to work with our tier three partner teams to move technically inclined people into those roles. Through organic growth of the tier one and two teams’ skillsets, we in turn grow as a whole. This will be best achieved by enhancing competencies through the effective use of change, runbooks, automation, and simplified tooling. We operate in a unique space by being part of a handful of OCI teams that have the ability to work with hundreds of services on a daily basis. Ultimately, the goal is to unify various services' processes in a single OCI operational workflow.
What roles are you currently hiring for on your team?
We’re specifically hiring IC 1-3 service operations engineers to act as generalists. We’re building a team of energetic, customer-focused service operations engineers to blend system admin, incident command, and NOC engineering disciplines. We need people who want to be part of a dynamic team that learns broadly how our cloud platform works, so they can be the bridge between product engineering and our partners. As part of the broader engineering organization, they act as the voice of the customer to influence product features and plans to improve the customer experience.
Are there any specific skillsets someone who is considering applying should have?
Currently, we’re looking for new hires with active TS/SCI FSP clearances. As our classified customer workload and the realms supported continue to grow, the base clearance requirements may change. Specifically, people with Linux, networking, incident management, and customer service experience, are encouraged to apply. Since there’s few people with all of the above, we have an extensive training and onboarding process that is designed to develop new hires. Investing in the professional success of our employees is a key focus of our management team.
What do people like most about being part of your team?
Our dynamic working environment.
