Adam Russell, Director of Offensive Security in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and his team lead all the security assessments across Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s environments and services. Through red-teaming exercises, vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and hardware security reviews, they work hand in hand with their defensive counterparts and engineering teams to remediate Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s weaknesses, which enables Oracle to offer a secure infrastructure to its customers. This team’s growth brings great opportunities for technology professionals with experience in hacking, as Adam will tell you below.
Taking on the big guys
Despite being part of a large company like Oracle, Adam’s team has a startup mentality that’s right for taking on the big guys in the cloud industry. “We’re started an offensive security strategy from the ground up,” Adam says. “Leadership trusts us to do our job without hands-on micromanagement; while many organizations approach red-teaming offensive security from a ‘here’s your scope—test and report’ perspective, our leadership flips it on its head and asks, ‘What would an adversary do? Now go do that,’ giving us the trust and freedom to poke and prod our environment, much like an adversary would in the wild.”
Join the “mischief-makers”
Adam’s group of “mischief-makers” is hiring Offensive Security Engineers with breaking and hacking experience. “We’re looking for individuals with a hacker mindset, experienced in finding vulnerabilities and weaknesses, who’ve participated in bug bounties, and who’ve run red-team engagements in the past,” Adam says. “Since we assess the environments in the Oracle National Security Regions subset, we’re looking for individuals with TS/SCI clearance and dedication to supporting a national-mission set in the US government.”
A high-performing team awaits
Should you become one of Adam’s “mischief-makers,” you’ll be amongst highly skilled individuals in performing security research across Oracle Cloud. “We’ve built a high-performing team with open and clear communication across the board, where everyone is able to make a decision—we won’t go into your project and tell you how to do things; it’s your operation, your security assessment, your call to determine vulnerabilities,” Adam explains. “We’ve built a very positive atmosphere, an open culture where everyone’s transparent and wants to deliver success.”
Additionally, joining the team means making a direct impact on Oracle’s products. “Everyone, every single person in this group has the opportunity to shape the future of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, whether they’re in a specific service team or on the Oracle National Security Regions project,” Adam shares. “Whether it’s our commercial customers, our government partners, or the government’s national security interests, we view security as our top priority.”
