Generations of Leaders: Bridging past and present to create the future

At Oracle, innovation starts with inclusion. In a world that so often seeks to polarize us on the basis of what makes us different, we’re actively working toward a cohesive workforce which can harness the full power of its unique parts. Cross-generational learning, collaboration, and leadership are a critical part of this diversity and inclusion ethos. As a company that’s been innovating since the ‘70s, we recognize the importance of bridging the gap between past and present so we can create the future.

The business case for generational diversity

Generations of Leaders (GLO) is our employee resource group that aims to foster an inclusive culture of learning and collaboration across generations in a meaningful way. “More than ever, our employee base includes people from multiple generations with varied cultures, experiences, and points of view,” notes senior director of diversity and inclusion, Traci Wade. “GLO serves as a place to help embrace and build on those differences.”

GLO is for both experienced and aspiring leaders who believe that sharing intergenerational knowledge isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s the smart thing to do. We recognize that cross-generational perspectives help us become better problem solvers and advocates for our customers, employees, and communities.

It takes a village

Cassie GrosjeanCassie Grosjean is a founding co-chair of GLO and proud Cherokee Indian woman. She jumped at the opportunity to take a lead role because the importance of having mentors of all ages and skillsets has been deeply engrained in her from a young age. “It’s so important that we’re able to learn from each other and not feel intimidated to approach one another,” she advises. “We all have wisdom to share. I was always raised to treat the janitor the same as the CEO, and that attitude helps me become successful in networking with people of all ages.”

Cassie personally knows the dangers of getting hung up on timelines and comparing chronological achievements. Entering the workforce as a first-generation college graduate helped her overcome these unproductive stereotypes. “I was paying off my student loans when I saw others buying houses,” she says. “I want to show employees of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences that you can create your own reality. Find the people who understand, accept, and empower you, and then you—and all of us—will ultimately be successful.”

The power of paying it forward

Mariah FambroMariah Fambro, Cassie’s founding co-chair, is equally passionate about the benefits of cross-generational collaboration. “GLO is a really important facet of the diversity equation,” she confirms. “There is so much to learn about cross-generational communication. Until you have a basic understanding of where others are coming from and where they might have been, you’re missing an important tool in your toolkit.”

Mariah’s family heritage has also played a role in teaching her the value of sharing wisdom through the ages. Her family tree has its roots in the state of Georgia, where they were one of the first Black families to own their own farm. “My ancestors taught me that no matter what barriers are put in place, it’s your responsibility to work together to either break them down or overcome them. We still own and farm on that land today and heavily believe in the philosophy of ‘each one, teach one.’ If you learn something, share it with someone else so you can continue to lift as you climb, because no one got to where they are or where they want to be without the help of someone else.”

Understanding what makes us tick

Sondi HardiSondi Hardi is an active member of GLO with more than 20 years of experience in the IT industry. She recognizes that every employee, regardless of age, has unique needs and career goals. That’s why it’s so important that Oracle employees receive the right level of support and autonomy.

“I remember when I first looked around and realized I was old enough to be the parent of many of my co-workers,” she recalls. “I remember feeling like I should have been further along. I’m now in the stage where my career is winding down. I’m a caregiver for my mother and it takes a lot of my time. I’ve been very lucky that my management is so understanding and supportive.”

With 17 grandchildren, Sondi, more than anyone, understands that every person brings unique talents to the table. “We must strive to understand each other and the myriad of factors that make up a person. Growing up in different times means very different motivators,” she observes. “Understanding what makes each generation tick is an important factor in understanding the whole individual.”

Awareness inspires inclusion

On top of networking and coaching opportunities, what GLO can offer employees is better education on these intergenerational issues. How can we create the right conditions for our people to thrive? If anything holds true through the ages, it’s that knowledge is power. “We’re sharing deep dives into each generational grouping.” Mariah says. “We began with Generation Z and will go through each generation providing practical resources and insights into what motivates them, how they like to be managed, what’s important in the workplace, and how they communicate best.”

While Mariah notes the benefits of stepping out of your comfort zone to learn something new, she also emphasizes the importance of having a safe space in which to do so. “GLO will help a lot of people tap into their potential which is of huge benefit to Oracle,” she shares. “It will allow those who may be more knowledgeable to collaborate with someone more versed in a different capacity. GLO focuses on making sure everyone is comfortable networking with anyone, regardless of job title or years of experience.”
