Deadlines, meetings, and unexpected turns are all part of managing family and career. As part of Father’s Day, we get advice and insights from working dads at Oracle on how they do it. Check out what they have to say—and hear more from some of our working mothers at Oracle.

Schedule time for what matters

Any working parent can relate to the perpetual time crunch, so it’s critical to first identify your most important priorities.

“Achieving work-family balance is part of Oracle’s culture, but it’s up to every employee to identify their most important moments and work with their managers on a solution,” says Felipe Jaramillo, a Senior Sales Program Manager and father of two based in Colombia.

“When I’m there, I’m focused on spending quality time. Spending one hour full of love and laughter a day is more meaningful than spending the whole day with them, but glued to your gadgets,” he advises.

Use employee resources to your advantage

Felipe Jaramillo, Senior Sales Program Manager, with his family at Oracle Take Your Kids to Work Day and father of twoOracle provides a range of benefits that support families and give peace of mind to parents like Felipe. “I love the family health plan; it allows me to be relaxed about the healthcare of my daughters. I know that when they need it, they’ll be in the right hands.”

But he advocates to look beyond the more traditional benefits, and take advantage of the full scope of opportunities for family integration, like #OracleVolunteer events for family members and Oracle’s Take Your Kids to Work Day—already an annual celebration for his two girls!

Learn from your dual roles

Looking for more intersections between kids and work may be the key to success, as our dads use their skills acquired and refined at work to be better parents, and vice versa.

“As a Sales Consultant, my storytelling skills help me to create inspiring bedtime stories,” shares Rizal. “And my interest in technology helps stimulate my daughters’ logical thinking.”

Define your measure of success

Petrisor, Social Media Communication Manager in Romania, pictured with his new sonWhen it comes to balancing family and career, Petrisor, a Social Media Communication Manager and new father based in Romania, believes it’s of utmost importance to know what kind of life you want for yourself and your family.

“It really depends on what people want from their lives. In my case, it’s important to have time for our new son. So choose your future according to your own personality and priorities in life. For me, Oracle has been a perfect fit to accomplish this,” he acknowledges.

Kristian, an Organizational Development Consultant in the US, pictured with his wife and eldestThat’s not to say to become complacent in your career, advises Kristian, an Organizational Development Consultant in the United States, after the recent birth of his second child. Rather, he suggests being clear on your short and long-term goals—and adjusting accordingly—to maintain your own personal ambitions.

He further advises both in-waiting and in-wanting dads to adjust their expectations accordingly for life with children. “Be prepared for a completely new level of messiness. Things won’t be as organized as you expect—very few things go according to plan. And be sure to volunteer to change the diapers!”
