Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Bets on the Underdog

"Oracle Cloud Infrastructure bet on the things I could do, and invested in the things I couldn't." -Sammi Merkulov, Vice President, Program Management

When Sammi, Vice President of Program Management for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, joined the company in 2017, she came in without any cloud knowledge. “On my first day, I literally ordered a Cloud Computing for Dummies book,” Sammi confides. Though this humble step undoubtedly helped her, the support and understanding she received from the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure team allowed her to become the capable cloud professional she is today.

Describing her organization as “a steering wheel that points projects in the right direction and at the proper business decisions,” Sammi gets to work with people who bring out the best in her abilities. “My teammates challenge me in the right ways and open my mind to new perspectives, options, and opportunities. I’m able to fail fearlessly. Even when we fail we learn, and when we learn we grow,” Sammi says.

Such support has allowed her to accomplish great things in a relatively short time. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure was looking at ways to improve upon how it was meeting its customers’ needs. Sammi led an initiative based around the Gartner IaaS requirements. From 2019 to 2020, that initiative helped Oracle Cloud Infrastructure improve its Gartner score from 38% to 62% Y-O-Y.

Reflecting on the opportunities she’s had at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Sammi admits, “it’s hard to take a risk on the underdog, though oftentimes, it’s about taking a risk on yourself and challenging yourself to new heights, experiences, and exposure.” She adds, “OCI is the first place I’ve worked where you’re encouraged and supported every step of the way to do something you think is impossible. They bet on the things I could do, and invested in the things I couldn’t. Because of that support across the organization, I’ve grown to new heights I never thought I could.”

I just like Sammi love Oracle, hence the reason i became an Oracle Database Administrator. Recently. took the Oracle Autonomous Cloud Specialist certification. i love the Autonomous cloud database. The fact that it is self-healing, self-securing and self-repairing. it is need a great technology. Reasons I have been applying to the OCI Team, over 200 jobs applied already, yet no luck on getting hired. It is my wish to join the OCI team and be apart of the great work that they are doing.
    Great Job Sammi!
