When Sammi, Director of Program Management for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), joined the company a year and a half ago, she came in without any cloud knowledge. “On my first day, I literally ordered a Cloud Computing for Dummies book,” Sammi confides. Though this humble step undoubtedly helped her, the support and understanding she received from the OCI team allowed her to become the capable cloud professional she is today.
Describing her organization as “a steering wheel that points projects in the right direction and at the proper business decisions,” Sammi gets to work with people who bring out the best in her abilities. “My teammates challenge me in the right ways and open my mind to new perspectives, options, and opportunities. I’m able to fail fearlessly. Even when we fail we learn, and when we learn we grow,” Sammi says.
Such support has allowed her to accomplish great things in a relatively short time. “When I joined OCI, we didn’t have a formalized release management process—teams were left to their own devices, making it hard to scale how you released a service on OCI. I was able to launch our own release management process, creating the framework of a foundation for a process that is now used by any and all services that want to build into our platform.”
Reflecting on the opportunities she’s had at OCI, Sammi admits, “it’s hard to take a risk on the underdog, though oftentimes, it’s about taking a risk on yourself and challenging yourself to new heights, experiences, and exposure.” She adds, “OCI is the first place I’ve worked where you’re encouraged and supported every step of the way to do something you think is impossible. They bet on the things I could do, and invested in the things I couldn’t. Because of that support across the organization, I’ve grown to new heights I never thought I could.”
