ERP 101: So What Is It?

A few people have whispered in our ears that while they’ve heard of ERP, they wouldn’t mind a cheat sheet that explains what it is and why it’s important to Oracle.

That’s why we are bringing you: “ERP 101.”

What is ERP?Here's a quick History Lesson. One upon a time, think B.C. (before cable) and before the Internet, every department, from sales to accounting, kept separate spreadsheets. By the early 1990s, most organizations moved to web-based ERP systems to bring order to the chaos so that users--from CEOs to account payable clerks--could access the same data. Internet-based ERP systems streamlined core business processes and improved data business visibility.
The acronym “ERP” stands for enterprise resource planning and refers to the systems and software packages used by organizations to manage day-to-day business activities, such as accounting, procurement, project management, and operations.

The whole idea is to tie together and seamlessly flow accurate information between business functions in order to give leaders and employees throughout a company access to real-time data.

By sharing data from multiple sources throughout an organization, ERP systems eliminate data duplication and provide data integrity with a “single source of truth.”

In 2012, Oracle began offering Oracle ERP Cloud, our cloud-based ERP “software as a service” or SaaS solution.

  • When ERP software is “in the cloud” that means it is kept on a network of remote servers instead of at a company’s location.
  • Customers benefit from cloud ERP in many ways. For example, running costs are lower than on-premises systems that require extra hardware and IT staff to manage.

Why is ERP important to Oracle’s business?
Here’s what we’d like you know.

  • Oracle ERP Cloud levels the playing field. Today, smaller companies can afford to use the same industrial-strength software larger enterprises have been using for years.
  • For small- and medium- businesses looking to innovate quickly and seize new business opportunities, the Oracle ERP Cloud offers the ability to easily add new users and quickly respond to changing business needs with real-time data.
  • The Oracle ERP Cloud is so affordable—and essential to all companies—so it can be an ideal product for Oracle sales people to take to a huge pool of potential customers, and open doors for our other cloud solutions.

We're also quite proud of our recognition as a cloud leader.

How can I get started selling Oracle Cloud ERP?
