GVD Bosnia & Herzegovina: Breast Cancer Cure Race
By Maria Sandu on Mar 07, 2014
The 6th Race for the Cure took place on October, 5th in Vilsonovo Setaliste, the most beautiful park in Sarajevo. The race is to raise funds for the victims of breast cancer and has become a tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is one of the only events at a national level that brings all Bosnians together: Muslims, Serbs, Croats and Jews, from all over the country and from both political entities.Ten Oracle Volunteers participated, providing cash and logistics support, including transportation, race promotions, food and drinks during the day, security, gifts and prizes for the runners – including breast cancer survivors – and technical assistance.
More than 5,500 people participated, travelling from 42 cities and towns. Among them were 500 women who have survived cancer and cheated death, all wearing pink race T-shirts.
All proceeds from the Race will be used for post surgery health kits and mammogram screenings. The core objectives are working with and assisting survivors and newly diagnosed ones while educating the general public on early awareness and providing mammogram checkups among underserved communities and women with no health insurance.
