Global Volunteer Days Project (Tree Planting in India) by Manognya Reddy

Oracle supports and promotes activity from our employees that gives back to the community.

On Saturday September 24th in Hyderabad India Manognya Reddy from our Campus Recruitment participated in a Tree Plantation Drive at Hi-Tech City Railway Station. Here are her notes from the day.

It was a partly-cloudy day and all the plans were in place to start the much-awaited event.

I was the first one to arrive at the venue at around 8:00 am. Soon after that Oracle Volunteers started trickling in. Most of the Volunteers were Campus Graduates who joined us this year. We put up the Oracle banners and all of us were wearing the red Oracle Volunteer t-shirts. Six Volunteers from Don Bosco Navajeevan joined us.

The plants were brought out quickly (I had left them in the railway custody a day earlier) and soon the whole team was busy. A bit of fertilizer in each pit and the plants were lowered into the pits and covered up with soil.

Within a couple of hours – all the 65 saplings were planted.

Now it was time for a break after the hard work.  Juice, flavored milk and biscuits were passed around and relished.

After our snacks we realized that the station parking was littered with paper and plastic. The team swooped down and in minutes about eight bags of litter was cleared and taken away.

Soon our water tanker came and all the saplings had their first watering. By this time it was past midday. We had packed lunch from a local caterer. The team decided to go back to office for a quick wash and for the hot lunch.  The entire team was in the office cafeteria. We had a quick lunch and left for our respective homes for a Saturday afternoon nap.

The Campus Graduates enjoyed the experience - In the words of Shruti Mantri and Aditi Sharma - "we are always looking out to do something on Saturdays and this is like a picnic for us" - sums it all.

I am back in office today (26 Sept 2011) and use the train to commute.  When the train chugged into the station, I was very eager to look at the saplings we had planted. They seemed to wave at me.
