In 2016, Matt, a University of California, Berkeley alum, graduated from Class Of and started his career as a Business Development Consultant with Oracle Digital. Fast forward one short year later, and Matt had already been promoted to Account Manager within the SMB Core Tech organization. To what does he credit his quick career growth?
“During Class Of our training was focused on the organization we would be moving into, so I was part of the Core Tech group. I learned a lot about database and how the full technology stack is organized. That meant I could really hit the ground running when I began my role as a BDC.”
Core Tech covers all of Oracle’s database and middleware, as well as their Platform as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service offering. Thanks to Class Of, Matt was already well-versed in what he needed to know.
"I was able to talk confidently about servers in the cloud, database, and how all that relates to PaaS offerings and integrations. So, Class Of not only propelled me into my first role, it laid a priceless foundation that I rely on to this day.”
As Account Manager, Matt is now in a high-visibility role that sees him interacting with C-level stakeholders on a daily basis. “I’m serving in the prime role for the state of Utah. So I travel out to Utah about once or twice a month. There’s a lot of face-to-face exposure with customers and senior stakeholders which is something I really enjoy about SMB.”
When it comes to achieving work-life balance, Matt says Oracle makes it easy. “I love our campus and the gym access. It means you’ve no excuses! I also play a lot of golf. I played in high school and on the club team in Berkeley, California. It’s great that with Oracle I can still get out on the golf course as much as I’d like.”
Another thing that Matt appreciates about Oracle is what he calls our “win-win combination”: the atmosphere of a start-up and the kudos of working for a company that’s instantly recognizable. “I know other people working in this industry, and one of the first things they have to do right out of the gate when talking to a prospect is sell them on who their company is and what they do.
“I feel lucky to have a great name like Oracle behind me because it means I already have one foot in the door. And we’re number one in the database space—so that’s always a good catalyst to start talking about cloud.”
