A new contribution to project OpenDMK: Exposing JMX MBeans as RESTful Resources.

Jean-Francois Denise has just contributed a very interesting source add-on contribution to Project OpenDMK. It is composed of two small java classes which provide a generic RESTful access to MBean attributes.

The RESTful Adaptor contribution makes it possible to navigate through complex data structures exposed by JMX MBeans using predictable URLs. All you need on the client side is an HTTP command line, or a simple web browser.

Read more about this on Jean Francois's excellent blog post: RESTful Access to JMX Instrumentation, Via URI-fication of MBean Attributes.

Hello,
I am under development of an application of monitoring of webservices and I begin in technologies around JMX and SNMP. Indeed, I must be able to make initially go up information on my webservices by using JMX then in the second time to transform this flow into SNMP towards a manager SNMP. Do you think that is realizable by using the JDMK and its modules SNMP agent and SNMP manager?

Cordially

Hi Antoine,

If you can model it in SNMP, then you will able to implement it using JDMK.

However you must know that it is usually not possible to map an Object model straight into an SNMP model - and not everything can be mapped.
Most of the difficulty will be in defining, and later implementing that mapping. Of course it all comes down to how complex is your original model, and what you need to expose through SNMP.

You will have to write a MIB - or find one that models the kind of data you want to export, and then you will have to implement it, and to link it with your JMX/Data model.

For your information this is what we did for the JVM-MANAGEMENT-MIB in JDK 5.

For more information on modeling in SNMP see the articles here:

And if you can get your hands on a volume of "Understanding SNMP MIBs", by Perkins and McGinnis, it will help you immensely.

Best regards,
