DB2 9 (V9.1 fixpack 1) now available on Solaris 10 x64

DB2 V9.1 for Solaris 10 x64 (64-bit instance) is now available for download from IBM. (Functionally it is equivalent to DB2 V9.1 fixpack 1 for Solaris SPARC)

The Part Numbers for DB2 products on Solaris x64 are as follows:

  • DB2 Enterprise Server Edition V9.1 for Solaris x86-64 Multilingual (C94Z2ML)
  • DB2 Client V9.1 for Solaris x86-64 Multilingual (C94Z5ML)
  • DB2 Runtime Client V9.1 Solaris x86-64 Multilingual (C94Z6ML)
  • DB2 Workgroup Server Edition V9.1 Solaris X86-64 Multilingual (C94Z3ML)
  • DB2 Express Edition V9.1 Solaris X86-64 Multilingual (C94Z4ML)

Note: DB2 9 fixpack 1 supports ZFS zvols as raw devices. Supports Solaris Zones by way of "inheritance" which means DB2 9 has to be installed before creating zones (unlike DB2 V8.2). Supports only 64-bit Solaris platforms (SPARC,AMD64, EMT64) and only 64-bit DB2 instances.

Try it out!!!

Comments:

Are there any articles that explain what "inheritance" means in your comment? I've installed DB2 V9.1 on a global zone and would like to know how to install it within a non-global zone. Thanks!

I cannot find a place to download DB2 Express Edition V9.1 Solaris X86-64 Multilingual (C94Z4ML). On the IBM site I found only the demo version for the entreprise edition 9.1. If available I would even prefer the 9.5 express edition for solaris x86-64

thanks for your answer

Cherry Shu just posted a blog entry that DB2 Express-C is now available for download for Solaris x64 as well as OpenSolaris.

http://blogs.sun.com/cshu/entry/db2_express_c_on_opensolaris

Follow the link to the IBM website and find the link to download DB2 Express-C and select the download link and find the one for Solaris x64. (Note I believe it requires 64-bit x86 chip)

Here is the Startup Guide for DB2 Express-C on Solaris x64:

Hi Experts ,

I have a Solaris Box (SunOS 5.8 Generic_117350-44 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V440 ) .
And using DB2 V8 FP10 Client on this. Now I want to upgrade to DB2 V9.1 FP4a Client , is it possible ?

OS Is 32 -bit .

If 32-Bit is not compatible then what is the workaround ?

Hi Rahul,

V440 can support 64-bit Solaris. Is there any specific reason why you are running Solaris as 32-bit on V440.

DB2 V9 does not support 32-bit Solaris. ( I did not find any 32-bit DB2 V9.1 client either on their website)

Hi Jigesh ,

Can you please confirm once more the miminum system requriemtnts to install DB2 V9.1 FP4a on Solari OE.
What I am getting from IBM site is

Solaris 9 with the following:
64-bit kernel
Patches 111711-12 and 111712-12
If raw devices are used, patch 122300-11
Solaris 9 Kernel Update Patch 112233-01 or later is required if 64-bit Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER systems are used.
Solaris 10
If raw devices are used, patch 125100-07
UltraSPARC

The Solaris istallation I have currently is ...

SunOS njdp1mgtrep01 5.8 Generic_117350-44 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V440

If I reboot with 64 bit kernel is it possible to have V9 client on above Solaris level ?

Please Reply.
Thanks!

Hi Jignesh ,

Here is some additional information about my server where I will be installing the DB2 V9 Client.

/usr/bin/isainfo -kv
64-bit sparcv9 kernel modules

/usr/bin/uname -a
SunOS njdp1mgtrep01 5.8 Generic_117350-44 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V440

Now question is , can I installl DB2 V9.1 FP4a client on above machine ?

I am confused as IBM site says , it has to be Solaris9 ro Solaris 10 for Sparc Machines .

Can you please confirm if installation is possible or not ?

If the IBM doc says so then it won't be supported on Solaris 8. One option would be to upgrade the setup to Solaris 10 to use DB2 V9.x.

Hi Cherry,

I keep getting the following error:
[IBM][CLI Driver] SL1032N No start database manager command was issued. SQLSTATE=57019

I tried starting the database, and I still get the above error.

Hi Hanish, did you run "db2start" command after you install DB2 and create a DB2 instance? Please refer to http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v9/topic/com.ibm.db2.udb.uprun.doc/doc/c0054795.htm to verify your db2 installation.
