Tokyo2Point0 020810

I went to the Tokyo2Point0 event last night. There were 250 people there with another 150 online, so it was a packed time for sure. Really nice to catch up with a bunch of people. I haven’t been to one of these events in many months. Just been too busy. It was also to good to see Michael Sullivan do a short talk on OpenSolaris as well.

Building International Communities in Tokyo

Here are two really nice articles in the Japan Times talking about the international tech community in Tokyo:
The articles describe the meta community here, and that's where we OpenSolaris guys hang out. By contributing to the larger community, we've found that the OpenSolaris community here is growing and earning its way right along side everyone else. There are language and culture barriers to overcome, but we all are making a great deal of progress. It's quite common now to find OpenSolaris developers, administrators, and users participating in multiple international communities, which, of course, helps us to learn in return. And the Web 2.0 community is growing in size and diversity as well. Also, since the tech community locally is well connected globally, we can extend our reach around the world by just interacting right here at home. Here's my photo archive as well (mostly Linux & OpenSolaris).

OpenSolaris at Tokyo Charity Event

The OpenSolaris community in Japan participated at a charity event last night -- Tokyo's Biggest Tech Party Ever. I don't know if it was the biggest ever, but there were 400 people there throughout the evening from over a dozen tech communities in the city. Michael Sullivan, who leads the Tokyo OSUG and who got us involved in the event, auctioned off a bag stuffed full of OpenSolaris and Glassfish items (shirts, CDs, books, mice, pens, pads, hats, and whatever else we could find). Good time. Some images.

OpenSolaris: 3 Community Events This Week

Members of the OpenSolaris Community in Japan will be participating in three community events this week Tokyo's Biggest Tech Party Ever (A Charity Event), OpenSolaris Hot Topics Seminar, and the Tokyo Linux User Group's Technical Meeting & Bonenkai. Should be a pretty busy week to end the year around here. I'll take some images. If you are in the area, stop by. After that I am taking a couple of weeks off -- no email, no cell phone, no Internet, no nothing. Just fresh air.

Tokyo's Biggest Tech Party Ever: December 17, 2009

A dozen international communities will be coming together in mid December for "Tokyo's Biggest Tech Party Ever" (info here, here). It's a charity event to benefit Room to Read. About 300 people are expected to gather in Roppongi, but I bet the number grows higher than that as the date approaches. I know a pile of OpenSolaris guys will be going, and I'll go for sure. I can imagine that thousands of very interesting photographs and videos will emerge from this gig, so I will shoot a set of photos myself. Here are some of the communities participating:

The international tech community in Tokyo is obviously a community of communities, and there is certainly some overlap in membership as well. But intentionally creating mega social events like this to bring multiple groups together has significant value because the more we mix as communities the more we learn from each other. To me, that's one of the core values of BarCamp as well. You build your own community locally, you then connect that community globally, and while you are doing that you intentionally mix with other communities so you remain flush with new ideas.

Upcoming Events: Linux, OpenSolaris, Web 2.0

I hope to check out three community events in Tokyo in the next week or so:

- 7/10: OpenSolaris User Group: ZFS and OpenSolaris Security
- 7/11: Tokyo Linux User Group: Network Security and ZFS
- 7/13: Tokyo2Point0: Cloud Computing and Lightning Talks

The timing is good, too. Canon called. They fixed my lens.

Tokyo2Point0 Images in Japan Times

So cool to see an article about TokyoPoint0 in the Japan Times today, and the reporter, Alex Martin, used six of my images to help illustrate the story. Even better. Nice to be part of a growing international web community in Tokyo. All of my stuff tagged Tokyo2Point0 tagged here.

Tokyo2Point0 041309

Images from Tokyo2Point0 the other night. It was the biggest T2P0 event I`ve been to so far. About 170 people, 10 talks, Web 2.0 developers and entrepreneurs from the international community. Nice to see a lot of Linux guys there and some OpenSolaris guys as well. It`s great to mix communities. I could really use that 1.2 right about now, though. Need a bigger hole in my camera. I`m still shooting at 800 and 1600. Too much grain.

Tokyo 2.0: The Sustainable Web: Monday April 13

Looks like an excellent lineup for the Tokyo2Point0 community event tomorrow night in Roppongi. There will be six talks on how the web community in Tokyo contributes to the global environmental effort. Then after those sessions there will be another four jet fast lightning talks about various local web 2.0 projects. It will be a packed night. The six lead talks will be 10 minutes each. The lightning talks will be 5 minutes each. Things will move fast. This will be the second meeting using this new rapid format. It worked very well last month to keep things jumping and to increase participation.

More info at the Tokyo2Point0 event page. Also see Tokyo2Point0 on Facebook. And see Tokyo2Point0 on Twitter. I tag my T2P0 posts and images here: http://blogs.sun.com/jimgris/tags/tokyo2point0.

Tokyo Beer & Blog 040609

I went to my first Beer & Blog community event in Shibuya last night after work. Very cool time. I met a lot of new people from Japan and from a dozen or so other countries, which is normal for these gatherings. There were a lot of entrepreneurs and developers there, and there were a lot of tech conversations as well. Also, some of us were kicking around ideas to build community here in Tokyo by engaging various Japanese and international groups while also extending those efforts by connecting to other communities globally. Interesting stuff. More soon.

Tokyo2Point0 030909

The Tokyo2Point0 community gathering was excellent last night. As always. But better, actually. They tried a new format of lots of mini-talks, so the evening was filled with a great deal of content. It was pretty dynamic. And taking pictures in the dark was as challenging as ever, too. I kept walking around looking for anyone who had even a little light on his or her face. I took 250 photos and only these survived. But I met several dozen of Tokyo`s finest entrepreneurs and Web 2.0 developers. It`s quite a diverse and talented international community, I must say. Very cool.

New Context Conference 2008: Day Two Photos

Here are some images from Day Two of the New Context Conference in Tokyo. Day One is here. Today`s conversations were excellent. Lots of discussion about new social and business networks and new applications for the mobile web. I especially liked the exploration of how western companies can do business in Japan, and how Japanese companies can expand in the U.S. throughout various market trends.

New Context Conference 2008: Day One Photos

I went to Day One of the New Context Conference in Tokyo today. The event was sponsored by Digital Garage and moderated by Joi Ito, and there was a great line up of speakers talking about doing business in an age of communities and open networks. Much of the conversation centered around Japan and the unique business and cultural issues here, but open networks are global so it was interesting to see Japan in that international context. The panel sessions were filled with huge content for web entrepreneurs, participants in social networks, and open content junkies. And the discussions were very comprehensive, too. Most panels just bounce along the surface, but these guys dug deep. Very impressive. Here are a few images ...

NetBeans Going to Tokyo2Point0

NetBeans will be featured at Tokyo2Point0 Monday night. Stop by if you are in the area. Sun Japan engineer Masaki Katakai will lead off talking about building Web apps with the open source IDE, and then there will be a talk about Lifestream replacing the blog (ouch, that may hit close to home for me). Some food and drink mixed in, too. Should be fun.

It will be good to hear about NetBeans again since I used to do communications for those guys more than four years ago now. Interesting how NetBeans really took off after I left! :) Anyway. Hopefully in the future we can get OpenSolaris presenting at Tokyo2Point0 as well. Such opportunity all around us now with all of these communities. One of the things I really like probing is how disparate communities can get together and collaborate, or at least meet and exchange ideas and opinions. So, not only are we learning how to cross firewalls and language/cultural barriers, but we ought to be crossing community lines as well. This happens quite naturally on all of the projects we are involved with, of course, but it's also an interesting area to explore more actively as well.

Hisayoshi Kato, Akihito Fujii, and I went to see Google and Korean Internet Ventures present at tonight's Tokyo2point0 event in Roppongi. Had a great time. Met dozens of new people from around the world doing Web 2.0 development. Very cool. Here are some images.

Tokyo2point0

I found this Tokyo2point0 community recently here in Japan. Looks very interesting. I'm going to try and get to the event next week. I'm especially interested in talking to these guys and learning about the Web 2.0 market in Tokyo. Could be an interesting experience for OpenSolaris to start reaching out to new communities here. Just started filling out my profile.
