Build 106 on x86/x64/SPARC

The latest developer build of the OpenSolaris operating system now runs on the SPARC processor. See the announcement threads on indiana-discuss here and here. Cool. I'll have to upgrade. Of course, I don't have a SPARC laptop, but I'll upgrade nonetheless. Good to see OpenSolaris on SPARC.

OpenSolaris Test Farm: SPARC, Intel, AMD

[osol-announce] test farm server interface released. Go get a 15 gig account and test your OpenSolaris software on some SPARC CMT (Chip Multithreaded), Intel Quad Core, and AMD Dual Core machines. This is an outstanding service offered by the testing community, so jump in and take advantage of it. You know, for some of us involved with OpenSolaris for a long time, it's really cool watching some of these projects come to fruition -- especially this one because the testing guys have always been leaders in the OpenSolaris community. And it's great that the systems are based in the U.S. and China. Asia is now very much top of mind in the community. And since the Sun China team was heavily involved in implementing the systems in Beijing that helps us connect some of these communities internally and externally around the world. To me, this is a core community building activity. In this case, engineers offering some critical resources for developers to get their work done. I can only see this project growing. Good stuff. See links and instructions in Jim Walker's announcement above. Also, see Jim's blog and Simon Sun's blog for more info on OpenSolaris testing, and also Robert Sohigian's blog for engineering at Sun China. I know I'm missing some guys, too. :)

T2: Sun, Fujitsu, Sparc, Solaris

Sun doubles processing power of UltraSparc T2 Plus servers: "Sales of systems based on the multithreading UltraSparc chips 'have seen dramatic growth.' [Jean Bozman, analyst at IDC] also said that she is seeing evidence of Sun gaining new customers via the multithreading technology.' " -- Computerworld

Cool. Nice to see Solaris running a hot new platform driving growth. Sun press release here. Sun technical blogs here.

T5120 T5220 T6320

Allan Packer summarizes the engineering blogs covering the new UltraSPARC T2 systems -- CMT Comes of Age. This is very cool since these are "the engineers who have developed [the systems], tested them, and pushed them to their limits." It's great that we can read directly from the developers. Scary smart stuff. There's also lots of press out there, but I tripped over this quote right away: "Sun has struck a blow with two deceptively powerful servers that, of all things, pack all of their mutlthreaded into rack and blade options." That's from Tom Yager's Sun's T-2 (Niagara 2) servers launch to an enthusiastic reception. See the joint Sun and Fujitsu announcement as well.

The Clean Room

James C. McPherson talks about his work with Jason King "to integrate his clean-room re-implementation of libdisasm for SPARC" -- Opening up OpenSolaris just a little bit more. I really like how James concluded his post: "I expect that there will be a few follow up putbacks as people find edge cases, but the great thing about this putback is that \*you\* can make those changes if you want. You don't have to depend on Sun doing it for you. Thank you Jason -- you've helped make OpenSolaris more open."

Cool. That's also the first piece of encumbered code replaced by a contributor on OpenSolaris, and that brings us to 187 putbacks via the request-sponsor program. Very nice.
