Tokyo CGM Night Episode 3

Last night I went to the Tokyo CGM Night Episode 3 in Harajuku with about 200 others from the international community. Had a fantastic time meeting everyone and hearing a bunch of rapid-fire micro talks about the very latest technology in Tokyo. And this was first time I got a chance to meet the famous Danny Choo. :) In Danny`s words: "CGM stands for Consumer Generated Media and the event is a gathering of bloggers, YouTubers, social networkers and folks who like to share." Works for me. Very friendly and innovative crowd. Looking forward to next time for sure.

Japan Social Media Marketers

I joined the Japan Social Media Marketers community recently. I found these guys via the Tokyo2Point0 community. Lance Shields started the group with these words: "So yet another community was born and it bumbled along with mainly myself posting blog entries and the occasional discussion thread that mainly I responded to myself. It was pretty lonely and it was a lot like every blog I started and stopped over the years. Then a really cool ..." And it goes on from there. The point is Lance stuck it out. Those who build things from scratch often find themselves alone and responding to themselves initially. In fact, some of the most successful people in the world started out that way, right? Anyway, I`ll hang out here for a bit and see what`s up. The Japanese international social media community seems fascinating. Stop by if you are around.

Congrats, Linda Skrocki

I know Melanie and Mary already bogged about this, but I couldn't resist. I'm a fan. Check out Linda Skrocki being profiled as a leader in corporate social media -- The New Robert Scobles: Seven Leading Corporate Social Media Evangelists Today. Very cool.

Linking In

I had a chance to see Reid Hoffman, CEO and co-founder of LinkedIn, talk a couple of weeks ago in Palo Alto. It was a good speech and helped solidify my belief that LinkedIn is an excellent business networking site. I'm investing a lot of time connecting with old friends and colleagues from previous jobs, and I'm finding that LinkedIn offers a professional tool to quantify and leverage the network I already have.

Hoffman's talk was well received generally, but I thought the audience missed some key points. Many people were looking to LinkedIn to give them something (namely, a job), when in reality the key message from the talk was that you only get after you give. So sign up, build your network, contribute your talents to the community, and the gifts will come your way as a result. Simple. The audience was also concerned about how to approach people on the network, as in cold contacts, but again the message from Hoffman was clear -- start with the people you know, offer something of value, and encourage your trusted contacts to broker introductions. When asked how someone could contact Hoffman himself on the network when emails are kept private, Hoffman responded: "Find people I know and approach me though them." Wonderful. Isn't that the way it has always worked? It has to go both ways, and I think some people were disappointed by that. The bottom line is that LinkedIn simply provides an infrastructure to help enable the ancient, time-tested process of the personal referral. In other words, you have to earn your referral.
