jp.opensolaris.org

Very interesting. The traffic to the Japan portal -- http://jp.opensolaris.org -- has tripled this month. All the portals have experienced increases in traffic lately, and most are probably related to the launch of OpenSolaris 2008.05. But Japan seems to have popped a cork. Whatever the cause, it's encouraging to see. I'm anxious to get the new OpenSolaris web application in place so we can remove the current portals, which were always a temporary solution, and properly localize the content on the site with the language and country communities that have been gathering. Japanese and Spanish are now the hottest portals on the site. Update: I just checked the site stats and Japan is now the #2 country hitting all of opensolaris.org. Tokyo is the #2 city. So, it's not just the portal, it's the entire site that is grabbing some Japanese attention this month.

OpenSolaris in Spanish

It's great to see OpenSolaris growing into multiple languages -- OpenSolaris books, material educativo. Since my Spanish is a bit weak since high school, David Galan assures me that these books in his blog contain the following topics:
  • Introduction to OpenSolaris
  • Installation Solaris Express
  • Starting and Stopping (SMF)
  • Process Management
  • User Management
  • Zones
  • BrandZ
  • ZFS
  • SVM
Also, the documents were written by members of the Hispanic OpenSolaris community, and they will be posted on the Spanish Portal -- which is the fastest growing portal right now in terms of web traffic.

Top 5 OpenSolaris Portals: Japan Leads

Now that all 12 OpenSolaris portal projects have been open for a while, I wanted to check how the international traffic was flowing. So, here's the top five portals in order in terms of page views to all of the pages in each portal over the last 90 days: Japan, Spain, China, Brazil, Poland. Japan has led by far since we opened the portals last year, but the Spanish community is growing the fastest the last few months. All the portals are growing, though, and that's very encouraging to see. I created the Portals Project to help address the problem of communication across language and cultural barriers, and I can see we are just really dipping our toes in this water. It's an ocean, actually. So much more to do. It's tough to draw conclusion from this data, especially if you know the communities involved, but the conversation flow is interesting and valuable.

Korea OpenSolaris Portal Opens

This is great news. The OpenSolaris Community in Korea opened their portal today: http://kr.opensolaris.org. The Korea Portal is part of the OpenSolaris Country Portal Project, which is an effort to translate the content on opensolaris.org. We now have 12 portals: Brazil, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Spain. These are all nascent but important efforts to build community across language barriers. Portal conversations take place within the Internationalization and Localization Community Group on the i18n-discuss mail list.

Czech OpenSolaris Portal Opens

Very nice that we can talk Czech now -- http://cz.opensolaris.org/. The OpenSolaris Community in the Czech Republic opened their portal last night. That makes 11 portals open from the Country Portal Project. Portal conversations take place within the Internationalization and Localization Community Group on i18n-discuss. Chime in there to get involved.

Russia OpenSolaris Portal Opens

We can talk Russian now since the Russia OpenSolaris Portal opened last night -- http://ru.opensolaris.org. That makes 10 OpenSolaris Portals in about as many months, and there are only two left to open from the original group. So, now that the vast majority are open and nascent communities are forming around them, it's time to start specifying what a version two of the portals would look like. That conversation has started on i18n-discuss, so if you'd like to participate, please feel free to join in. The first phase of the portals was about getting some space carved out on the site, building some teams, and translating some content. That was it. Very simple. The next phase should be much grander. But we'll need to articulate just exactly what that is in order to have a productive technical conversation with the website engineering team.

By the way, Russia is the number one destination for OpenSolaris Starter Kit shipments followed by the U.S., Poland, and India. I have to get to Eastern Europe soon. :)

Mexico OpenSolaris Portal Opens

Mexico makes the latest portal project to open -- http://mx.opensolaris.org. That's eight. Only a few more from the first batch and then we can start specifying what we want for v2 of the portals.

Brazil OpenSolaris Portal Opens

So cool that the Brazil OpenSolaris Portal opened this morning, and a special thanks to Rafael Vanoni for doing the initial set of translations. I have a feeling that the Brazil Portal will take off like no other. I've updated the OpenSolaris Country Portal Project. There are still a few portals that remain to open, but with seven open now I think we're doing pretty good. Portal conversations take place on i18n-discuss.

Spain OpenSolaris Portal Opens

The Spain OpenSolaris Portal today: http://es.opensolaris.org/. That makes six portals open and six to go in the first batch of projects we started earlier this year. See the portal project for more information and the i18n list for portal discussions. Also, what's cool here is that the Spain OpenSolaris User Group is using the Spanish Portal as their home web space. Also, the Japan OpenSolaris User Group is using the Japan Portal, and French OpenSolaris User Group is using the French Portal. So, the portals are starting to serve their purpose, and project leaders are starting to come together. Not everyone can have a portal, of course, but at least for the those user groups in regions where a country/language portal also exists, there is a nice mechanism for consolidation and collaboration.

India OpenSolaris Portal Opens

The India OpenSolaris Community opened their portal today: http://in.opensolaris.org/. Very cool. That makes five portals open and about seven to go. See the portal project for more information and the i18n list for discussions. Also, all of my blogs about the portals are tagged here.

France OpenSolaris Portal Opens

The France OpenSolaris Community opened their portal today: http://fr.opensolaris.org/. Excellent. That makes four portals open and about eight to go. See the portal project for more information and the i18n list for discussions. Also, all of my blogs about the portals are tagged here.

Update: Laurent Blume announces the French Portal here, here, here.

OpenSolaris Principles

I often talk (here, here) about the value of the OpenSolaris Community Principles, and thanks to the Country Portal Project we now have the principles expressed in a few different languages around the world. When we started the portal project, we offered each portal team a certain number of pages to translate initially so each portal would open with basically the same information. Over time, however, we want each portal to grow in ways specific to each region. But as the portals diversify, we'd also like to keep some things consistent across all regions -- The Principles being one of those obvious items.

In English
...

Project Overview: Our principles
  • The project will evolve in full view of the world. By opening our code, processes, documentation, and historical information to everyone, we offer a real opportunity for others to join our community and contribute from an equal footing. Technical information will be withheld if there are legal restrictions, never because it is incomplete or of poor quality.
  • We will be inclusive. Proposals will be evaluated based on technical merit and consistency with overarching design goals, constraints, and requirements.
  • We will be respectful and honest. Developers and users have the right to be treated with respect. We do not make ad hominem attacks, and we encourage constructive criticism. Our commitment to civil discourse allows new users and contributors with contrarian ideas an opportunity to be heard without intimidation.
  • Quality is always a top priority. The OpenSolaris project will continue the long tradition of quality engineering established by the Solaris Operating System (OS).
  • We are independent. Decisions within the project are made independently from those concerning Sun's business. Sun's management controls the business aspects of the Solaris product, but will not exert undue influence within the OpenSolaris community.

Přehled o projektu
: Naše principy
  • Tento projekt bude vyvíjen zcela otevřeně. Otevřením našeho zdrojového kódu, procesů, dokumentace a historických informací nabízíme každému reálnou příležitost, aby se spojil s komunitou a přispíval z rovnocenné pozice. Technické informace nebudou poskytnuty pouze kvůli zákonným omezením, nikoliv pro nekompletnost nebo špatnou kvalitu.
  • Budeme objektivní. Návrhy budou vyhodnoceny podle technických aspektů, konzistence a s přihlédnutím k vytyčeným cílům, omezením a nárokům.
  • Budeme zdvořilí a čestní. Vývojáři a uživatelé mají právo, aby s nimi bylo zacházeno s respektem. Neděláme osobní útoky a podporujeme konstruktivní kritiku. Náš závazek k zdvořilým rozpravám zaručuje novým uživatelům a přispěvatelům s jinými názory bezproblémové vyslechnutí.

New Multilingual OpenSolaris Reg Pages

The sign in, registration, password reset, and profile update pages on opensolaris.org are now offered in Japanese and Chinese. Just click the drop down arrow. English is still there, of course, but as we grow in various parts of the world we are trying to make it easier to talk to those who may not know as much English as we do. The process of learning multiple languages takes a while, but we are making progress. The Japan Portal is open, of course, and there are about a dozen more in the works. Thank you to Derek and Steve.

Press on the Japan Portal

Enterprise Watch in Japan covers the OpenSolaris Japan Portal -- OpenSolaris Update: More coverage from Yomiuri Online, Japan ZDNet, and Open Tech Press.

OpenSolaris Japan Portal Opens

The Japanese OpenSolaris community opened their portal today: http://jp.opensolaris.org/

This represents the first country portal on opensolaris.org. The Japan project is just beginning, though, so if you'd like to get involved, sign up on the discussions page because there is still a lot of content to translate. Sun issued an announcement in Japan today as well -- OpenSolaris

The Japan portal is part of the OpenSolaris Country Portal Project, which is an effort to translate the content on opensolaris.org into as many languages as possible. It's a community effort and it's all very manual at this point, but you are more than welcome to participate. What we are trying to do is enable country leaders to have access to a subset of content on opensolaris.org to do translations and to add new local content all within top level country domains. The portals themselves are actually "projects" on opensolaris.org altered to look like the main site. Since Japan is now live, you can see that project listed at the bottom of the projects page: 日本ポータル. There are more than a dozen of these country projects in the works.

We're not quite 100% there with the look and feel and functionality, obviously, but this is an excellent start. Thank you Derek, Stephen, and Stephen. My goal is to build entire sites within the main site, and I specifically want these portals to grow and take on their own personalities. But the key is to encourage all the country portal leaders to have relationships with each other as well as those on main English OpenSolaris site. This is important because we want the content to evolve to express each country's individuality, but we also want to have a base level of OpenSolaris content that is consistent and updated regularly across all the countries. This way we can all growth together but diversify as well. All of that will require consistent and open relationships across multiple language barriers, so that's why the project lives within the Internationalization and Localization Community. It will take some time to find the right balance between translated content and new local content, but I'm confident that will come together over time. But the most important thing right now is to translate content from English into whatever other language is necessary. And the country portal project serves that purpose just fine. There won't be any serious upgrades until we can get at least the first batch of portals out there. More as we go.

OpenSolaris Portals Project Proposal

For the last few weeks some of us have been talking about building language/country portals on opensolaris.org. Some of the conversation has been happening internally, but it's moving externally now as well -- pending community interest and consensus, obviously. The longest thread at present is on the Internationalization & Localization Community discuss list. As a result of these conversations, I put an OpenSolaris project proposal on the main OpenSolaris discuss list under the conveniently titled Project Proposal: Country/Language Portals for opensolaris.org. If you are interested in commenting or participating, please feel free to chime in on either thread. The formal project proposal thread only needs a "second" to be approved, but after that the conversation and implementation will continue within the Internationalization & Localization Community in collaboration with the OpenSolaris website infrastructure team. It will be interesting to work on this project and to see what regions around the OpenSolaris world translate the site.
