Moving Faster

It's great to some of the core open development issues really starting to heat up now. You can hear Tim Cramer, Stephen Hahn, and Dave Miner talk about these projects at the OpenSolaris Community Strategy Planning Meeting (slides and audio). At the 21:35 minute mark of the audio, which is slide 6 in the deck, you'll hear Tim talk about the movement of kernel development (gate and tools) to Mercurial and then outside the firewall. See the preliminary schedule and the SCM migration project here and here for more details. Anyway, back to the call: lots of install from Dave and lots of packaging from Stephen. Good stuff. I slept through this meeting, so I'm glad it's all online.

Stephen Hahn

A couple of weeks ago Stephen Harpster sent this mail around to the various engineering teams here at Sun about Stephen Hahn. I'm putting it here in my blog for safe keeping because I think it's important to live outside the company as well.

Stephen Harpster on the promotion of Stephen Hahn:

It is my great pleasure to announce Stephen Hahn's promotion to Distinguished Engineer. Stephen joined Sun in 1997, right out of Brown University where he received his PhD in physics. At Sun, Stephen has been a tour de force, first driving the work for Resource Management which earned him the Chairman's Award in 2002, followed by SMF (Service Management Facility) which earned him a second Chairman's Award and InfoWorld's Innovator Award in 2005.

Today, Stephen is the tech lead for OpenSolaris. He has been instrumental in the success of OpenSolaris, from the initial strategy and implementation planning, to how the community and program are evolving today. He works with both the community outside of Sun on adoption and governance, as well as with engineering, marketing, and legal groups inside Sun on taking proprietary projects out into the open.

Please help me in congratulating Stephen. This is a major step that will benefit both Stephen and Sun, and one that is certainly well deserved.

Congratulations, Stephen!

New OpenSolaris Tech Lead

Stephen Harpster announced our new tech lead for the OpenSolaris project recently. Congrats to Stephen Hahn! You have quite a job cut out for you, Stephen, but we look forward to your technical leadership. The project is clearly entering a new phase, which in many respects will transform OpenSolaris as significantly as the opening itself. The governance and co-development conversations are heating up within the community, and the planning will lead to decisions and implementations before you know it. From the meetings I've been sitting in (and getting lost in) lately, the challenges seem pretty substantial. But you know ... I said that way back when we were considering the license, the source code analysis, the pilot program, the tools decisions, the web site construction, the two launches (the mini launch in January and the big one in June), and a few (dozen) other things I'm sure I missed along the way. Yet the project seems to be coming together ... piece by piece. Some of it surprises me, but most of it is pretty much according to plan. Not that we wrote much of that plan down, or anything, but you get the idea. :) But it's all on a scale that's difficult for me to imagine, to be honest, so that's why Stephen is so important here. Stephen has a mind that can picture this stuff.
