Contest Update: 10 Days to Deadline

The OpenSolaris Community Innovation Awards project is moving along. The project includes two programs: (1) a contest and (2) a student grant program. Submissions for the student grant program are now closed, and we will announce the grants June 16. Here are the current proposals. But more importantly, the deadline to submit entries for to the contest program is June 14. That is only 10 days from today! Winners will be announced in August. Here are the current contest entries.

What we need: We are especially looking for judges now. If you are interested in getting involved in the project and helping judge entries, please send mail to awards-program at opensolaris dot org. You can also post from the awards-program Jive forum.

Money

I just pinged all 67 OpenSolaris User Group lists as a reminder that we will be giving away a lot of money in the Innovation Contest & Undergraduate Student Grant Program. I generally don't like mailing such a large number of lists with the same message, but I can't think of a better way to do this. There are about 400 people on advocacy-discuss, which is supposed to be the meta-UG list, but there are another 4,500 people spread out across all of the individual user group lists around the world. Mail sent to advocacy-discuss only occasionally gets to the UG lists, and that's the problem. I've also come to realize that we have many thousands of people who are only loosely connected to the main project via the user groups and the Advocacy CG, so mailing all the lists individually is the only way I can think of to reach everyone (especially if a deadline is near). Not the best system in the world, eh? And actually, those thousands will grow to many tens of thousands (more?) this year with the release of Indiana.

Anyway, if you want more info on the contest and/or the grant program, go to the project page. If you have more questions, send mail to awards-program at opensolaris dot org. And if you enter the contest or grant program, good luck!

I see Alan DuBoff and the Silicon Valley OpenSolaris User Group (SVOSUG) now have a video channel on USTREAM.TV. Some interesting little bits in there.
