Tokyo's Biggest Tech Party Ever: December 17, 2009

A dozen international communities will be coming together in mid December for "Tokyo's Biggest Tech Party Ever" (info here, here). It's a charity event to benefit Room to Read. About 300 people are expected to gather in Roppongi, but I bet the number grows higher than that as the date approaches. I know a pile of OpenSolaris guys will be going, and I'll go for sure. I can imagine that thousands of very interesting photographs and videos will emerge from this gig, so I will shoot a set of photos myself. Here are some of the communities participating:

The international tech community in Tokyo is obviously a community of communities, and there is certainly some overlap in membership as well. But intentionally creating mega social events like this to bring multiple groups together has significant value because the more we mix as communities the more we learn from each other. To me, that's one of the core values of BarCamp as well. You build your own community locally, you then connect that community globally, and while you are doing that you intentionally mix with other communities so you remain flush with new ideas.

1 Minute at CommunityOne

Ashwin Bhat and Angad Singh asked me for one minute of my time outside the keynote hall at CommunityOne a few weeks ago. Hey, what's a minute, right? Happy to. But this minute was to be digitally recorded. Uha. Video. I generally shy away from such things because I`m shy about being interviewed. But these are really good guys and they`ve done great work as Campus Ambassadors in India, so I felt safe in front of their camera (though I`d clearly much rather be behind the camera). It wasn't too bad, though. But the 1 minute ran for 2 minutes and 21 seconds! Anyway. Thanks, guys. Great fun. Hope to get back to India sometime soon.

OpenSolaris at CommunityOne SF 2009: Photos

I was in San Francisco last week for the launch of OpenSolaris 2009.06 at CommunityOne and for a pile of team meetings about the website transition. And some other stuff. Pretty good trip. It was great to meet so many people who I have developed digital relationships with over the past few years. I took hundreds of images as I walked around, but only these 66 survived. Also, I made no attempt to be comprehensive, so this set below is only a tiny portion of the actual conference. Anyway, it was fun -- especially hanging out with the OpenSolaris User Groups. Special thanks to Teresa Giacomini for running a wonderful OSUG event.

Dive Deep into OpenSolaris at CommunityOne

Going to CommunityOne in San Francisco next week? Here's the schedule. Don't forget the "deep dives" they have in there, too. You can register for those sessions right here. It's free.

Some Thunder and Lightning at CommunityOne

The OpenSolaris community is being encouraged to submit some lightning talks at CommunityOne in San Francisco on June 1st. Cool. See Aaron Houston's mail and link for details. At conferences I heavily favor the lightning talks. I find the rapid-fire format promotes more direct community involvement at the event, and it also generates a great deal of humor as well. Most hour long sessions are just too quiet. I prefer quick talks full of noise. Some thunder and lightning. See you at CommunityOne.

CommunityOne SF and NY

There will be two CommunityOne conferences next year. One in San Francisco and one in New York. Excellent. I'm going to try to get to at least one of these events. I'm from New York originally, so I'd like to get back there for a visit if I can. We'll see. In the meantime, if you want to get involved, check out the link below.

OpenSolaris Launch at CommunityOne: Pics

OpenSolaris 2008.05 took center stage at CommunityOne yesterday. I just walked around and took photos and talked to people all day. The buzz was palpable. Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this distribution to life. New users go to opensolaris.com along with those interested in developing applications for the operating system, and developers interested in working on the system itself and many other related projects go to opensolaris.org.

Advocacy Front Page

I put the OpenSolaris Summit and CommunityOne graphics on the front page of the Advocacy Community Group. Need to do something with all the photos we have, though. We have more than 4,000 images of community members on Flickr now. It would be nice get them on the ACG pages in some way.

OpenSolaris on C1 GNU/Linux Panel

Well, it seems it's more than just a panel, eh? Barton has all the details -- GNU/Linux Distro Smack Down! Only at CommunityOne. Should be a lot of fun.

Update: Here are the guys from the panel last week:

OpenSolaris at CommunityOne

Karsten Wade, Fedora; Barton George, Sun (moderator); Glynn Foster, OpenSolaris; Jono Bacon, Ubuntu; Zonker Brockmeier, OpenSUSE.

CommunityOne SF 2008: Reminder

We are only a few days away from CommunityOne in San Francisco. This year's show promises to be bigger and more diverse than the inaugural event last year. There will be dozens and dozens of sessions from open source communities around the world. OpenSolaris will have eight technical sessions that will dive deeply into the latest innovations from the Opensolaris community. Don't miss it!
