Toyota Gets Quick

Toyota Wins Few Fans at the Track. Interesting article in the WSJ. Toyota has been slowly earning its way in American racing for some time now, but lately there are some negative reactions from NASCAR fans to Toyota's success. But I wonder if that's more a result of a "cocky" and "arrogant" driver than a relatively low key car company.
Comments:

I think Toyota scares many NASCAR fans because it's not Chevy, Ford or Dodge. It scares them to think that a Japanese car company can come into the US and do well at what has been a pure American sport.

The problem with NASCAR fans is they fail to recognize all of the other motor sports out there and fail to be open minded to anything outside of an Oval. The road courses in the NASCAR year are not well attended to this day. Sadly NASCAR to me is the culmination of a group of over paid drivers who are not good at what they do and have trouble really driving anything other than 190MPH turning left. You put them on a road track and they cry and whine all weekend about the fact that the KART raised European and CHAMP car guys are pushing them around in their Toyota's.

It's fun to watch from the outside as NASCAR struggles to make Toyota likable. They have done everything right this year and it's still not enough for the fans who are close minded and most drive Japanese cars to and from work. It's always funny to me in a parking lot in the south all the Toyota's, Honda's and other cars that have NASCAR stickers. If they all purchased true American cars GM and FORD would not be looking at a 20 billion dollar loss this quarter, they hate the Toyota on the track but love it off the track.

Don't let Mazda make a NASCAR, they will kill them with a rotary engine.....

P.S. - I do realize that most "Japanese" cars in America are now build in America, hell my 1990 Isuzu was built in Indiana and that was almost 20 years ago.

hey ... I can remember Andretti switching to Honda in the 80s at Indy. There was no outcry. It took Honda a while to get its legs, but they stuck with it and were competitive. That was CART back then. To me, the auto sports should be open to all. If you can field a car and you're fast you're cool. If you're not a jerk, anyway, and some of these guys certainly are. I don't especially care where you come from. Now, I'm not close to Nascar, obviously, so they may have difficulty with my (and your) view. But just wait till the Koreans and Chinese start fielding cars at Daytona! :)

It's going to make some "People" here in the south a bit angry......
