Tokyo OpenSolaris Study Group 032809

On Saturday I spent the day with the Tokyo OpenSolaris Study Group. These guys participate in the Japan OpenSolaris User Group, but they formed this study group that gets together for a half day technical session on Saturdays to dig into the internals of OpenSolaris. Then a nomikai wraps up the day and goes well into the evening. Cool.

All of my posts on the OpenSolaris community in Japan are tagged "jposug" here:

This is fascinating. Is there any chance there is video? I'd love to learn more about the format.

hey ...

No video. Sort of low tech at the moment. :)

This little group grew out of the larger JPOSUG, which itself grew out of a Sun Japan program to hold consistent events for OpenSolaris. In other words, back when we started a few years ago, things were one way -- Sun engineers were doing the talking and educating the community. Over time as the technology spread, the community grew substantially, list traffic (in Japanese) grew a great deal, and community members started taking over some of the speaking roles. And writing, too. There have been some technical articles here from non-Sun community members. So, out of that large group of people who regularly attend the JPOSUG meetings (about 100 or so) there grew a smaller group of highly technical guys who wanted more attention on the internals of OpenSolaris. These guys study. They dig into the books and hack and do presos and share that with the other guys. Plus, these sessions are taking place on Saturday, which is critical to make things more casual and give people more time to learn and exchange ideas.

So, no specific format, really. Just a change in focus and more interactive with Sun guys and the community mixing more freely and equally. It`s a sub-group, basically.
