The Debate: OpenSolaris, Linux, Windows

Sun, Linux Foundation, Microsoft to Debate Operating Systems. It seems that in April the Linux Foundation`s Jim Zemlin will moderate a debate between Jim Zemlin of the Linux Foundation, Sam Ramji from Microsoft, and Ian Murdock from Sun. Interesting way to structure a debate with the moderator as participant, but it should be a fascinating discussion. Great to see OpenSolaris engaging in forums like this. I`d love to see it if I were in San Francisco, but maybe there will be some video or audio.
Comments:

I'd love to go too, but the website says it's "..an exclusive, invitation-only" event.

Ah, I just saw that. Thanks. I guess I would \*not\* be able to go if I were in SF, eh? Oh, well. The "exclusive" bit means I now have no interest whatsoever.

Interesting, but I have to reserve some skepticism about the fairness given the sheer amount of anti Opensolaris FUD that has come from the moderator.

I know. That's why he should be a panelist and there should be another moderator (someone not from the LF would be best). That would be cool This way all three would be at the same level. But perhaps it's not a real debate as it is being billed? Maybe it's just discussion and the press release is just spinning it up?

Whenever there is a Linux vs OpenSolaris vs Windows vs MacOSX debate, it is almost never techical in nature although it might pretend to be so. To win such an argument one must focus on soft values: cute dolphines, the right to free speech, protecting the weak and have cool graphical demos with the promise of a future holywood movie.

FWIW - you can request invitations. I did, and I got one... I intend on going, it should be interesting.

I don't know, this sort of debate seems more suited to a mailing list, and preferably someone else's ;) Maybe they will come up with some interesting anecdotes.

What might be more interesting is Sam Ramji moderating and representing Linux, Ian Murdock representing Microsoft, and Jim Zemlin doing Sun ;)

Edward ... that`s a \*very\* good idea. You know, skilled debaters should be able to take any side of an issue with ease (if you study this sort of thing historically), so it would be great fun to see a \*real\* debate with the roles mixed up from what we think they should be. I view debates as shows, basically. Good fun if implemented well.
