OpenSolaris News

Some news today on the Solaris platform and open source Solaris from John Loiacono, executive vice president of Sun Software, and Glen Weinberg, vice president of Sun's Operating Platforms Group coming out of the company's NC04Q3 Wall Street event in New York. There will be much more as the week unfolds, but here are a few stories from eWeek.

What continues to be interesting about this story is not simply that Sun is open sourcing the Solaris platform, but that Sun executives are also continuing to express themselves publically about the project well before the formal announcement. Years ago they decided to implement this as much as possible with the direct involvement of customers and developers. Looking at this from the inside has been fascinating, especially considering how previous product launches have been executed. In this case, the execs have engaged the market openly -- and regularly -- and have carefully considered the feedback. Sure, we are doing our own private market research like any company would, but we are also clearly moving more toward a Cluetrain model. This is going to be a heck of a case study when this is all done.
Comments:

The real problem is that if the beastie is not really opensource (as in http://www.opensource.org/), I will come to Sun Microsystems with a train of cluesticks to use :D That's the real fear you have to have ;)

We've said that the project will be OSI approved. Not to worry. :)
