OpenSolaris Japan Portal Opens

The Japanese OpenSolaris community opened their portal today: http://jp.opensolaris.org/

This represents the first country portal on opensolaris.org. The Japan project is just beginning, though, so if you'd like to get involved, sign up on the discussions page because there is still a lot of content to translate. Sun issued an announcement in Japan today as well -- OpenSolaris の日本語ポータル・サイトを開設  ・  日本のオープンソー ス・コミュニティーを積極的に支援.

The Japan portal is part of the OpenSolaris Country Portal Project, which is an effort to translate the content on opensolaris.org into as many languages as possible. It's a community effort and it's all very manual at this point, but you are more than welcome to participate. What we are trying to do is enable country leaders to have access to a subset of content on opensolaris.org to do translations and to add new local content all within top level country domains. The portals themselves are actually "projects" on opensolaris.org altered to look like the main site. Since Japan is now live, you can see that project listed at the bottom of the projects page: 日本ポータル. There are more than a dozen of these country projects in the works.

We're not quite 100% there with the look and feel and functionality, obviously, but this is an excellent start. Thank you Derek, Stephen, and Stephen. My goal is to build entire sites within the main site, and I specifically want these portals to grow and take on their own personalities. But the key is to encourage all the country portal leaders to have relationships with each other as well as those on main English OpenSolaris site. This is important because we want the content to evolve to express each country's individuality, but we also want to have a base level of OpenSolaris content that is consistent and updated regularly across all the countries. This way we can all growth together but diversify as well. All of that will require consistent and open relationships across multiple language barriers, so that's why the project lives within the Internationalization and Localization Community. It will take some time to find the right balance between translated content and new local content, but I'm confident that will come together over time. But the most important thing right now is to translate content from English into whatever other language is necessary. And the country portal project serves that purpose just fine. There won't be any serious upgrades until we can get at least the first batch of portals out there. More as we go.
