OpenSolaris Developer Preview

Yesterday Project Indiana was born as OpenSolaris Developer Preview. Cool. I believe this is a milestone for the OpenSolaris project, and I think congratulations ought to be offered to those who designed and built the product. I'm also very much looking forward to using it. The reaction from the community has been disappointing, but I understand the reasons why so it's hard to judge too harshly. Opening up is difficult, and building a self-governing community that asserts and operates as a group is just as difficult. These things take time. It's worth it, though. A community is developing, and you are watching it in real time. Messy, eh?

What has the reaction been?

Congratulations on OpenSolaris Developer Preview, great boot times.
"The reaction from the community has been disappointing", lets think about this Ubuntu 7.10 just released and Fedora 8 release date is seven days from today. The calender is full! As for myself I got it hot of the press, but I must admit if you want a developer base why not ship with a compiler installed and configure? Perhaps more pkg's would appear under better circumstances.

Nice Work Team!

@Bryan: the choice of GNU tools by default, lack of ksh93 as default shell, and http://blogs.sun.com/sommerfeld/entry/premature_naming, mainly...

The reaction of the community to the bits themselves seems to have been really good for a developer release.

The reaction of the community to naming it "OpenSolaris" has been not just disappointing but outright hostile.

But nobody should be surprised at it... Ian has been talking about this for months (ever since Community One in the spring) and certainly at the developer summit. So there should have been no cry of outrage.

But I suppose Ian and Simon misjudged the heat of the response.

Many people are upset about the use of the name OpenSolaris for the distro. I understand that. I don't think consensus was reached, but on the other hand I'm disappointed by some who have used the issue to attack others. That's my real concern in this issue.
