JavaOne: Open Source, Open Standards

Simon Phipps delivered the opening keynote here at JavaOne Tokyo this morning. He talked about how communities function and how open source offers freedom to developers and open standards offers freedom to deployers. James Gosling, unable to make the trip this year, offered some personal comments via video about the explosion of Java-connected devices here in Japan.

Comments:

Jim, You got some awesome pictures here, both in this post and the ones below, but I was wondering if it would not be better were you to put smaller thumbnails of the pictures on the main page and have a link to the actual sized ones on an other page. I see that you already have links to see more of those pictures, so all that remains of my suggestion is that maybe you can resize the main page pics to a thumbnail size. Even on a broadband connection (I am reading this from our office, which has a decent network connection), it takes a while to load the page and slows things down. Just a suggestion. Cheers! :)

yah, you're right. 20 megs doesn't load that fast from Flickr, I guess :) I took out the individual links to the big images themselves on the first few posts and just gave a link to the collection of all the J1 images at Flickr. You can get a variety of sizes there. It seems if you take out the link to the actual large image of each file, it significantly increases the speed. I wonder if Flickr sends the data for the entire image, not just what's been sized in the post. I'll try it with true thumbnails after the next session. I also reduced the number of entries on the page.
