1 Million

As January 2007 comes to a close, we just achieved our first 1 million hit month to the 177 OpenSolaris discussion forums. Yesterday morning at 6:30 am Tokyo time, actually. I couldn't sleep so I was killing time poking around the Jive admin database. Very cool. Congratulations to everyone. And thank you, too.

In general, conversations about OpenSolaris on our ever-growing number of lists and forums continue to increase at a rate far surpassing even some of our recent predictions. Actually, we are about eight months ahead of our goal at this point. Well, the word "goal" is silly in this context because you can't artificially create a genuine community conversation just to collect a number and expect to earn credibility. So, I guess what I mean is that we have metric here that seems to reflect an interesting trend. We are building a community -- releasing code, taking putbacks, starting projects, creating infrastructure, (yes, more to come, we know) -- and the conversation numbers substantiate that a lot of people are interested in what we are doing and they are interested in getting involved. The rate of growth may be increasing a bit recently, but so far
we've been growing at a pretty steady clip since opening. Registrations to opensolaris.org doubled in January, too.

Here are the numbers for January for list/forum conversations:
  •  Total Web Views:  1,041,476
  •  Unique Visitors:  888,206
  •  Total Threads:  1,736
  •  Total Messages:  7,580
Here are the numbers for 20 months of list/forum conversations:
  • Total Web Views:  10,147,246
  • Unique Visitors:  7,244,1930
  • Total Threads:  21,152
  • Total Messages:  20,675
Now, I'm sure older and more established open source engineering projects blow these numbers away, but at 20 months I think we have a respectable start as we come up to our second anniversary in the spring. Since I was unable to predict these numbers (I'm the one who missed by 8 months hitting the million mark), I also feel reasonable certain that I'll have no clue what the numbers will be when OpenSolaris engineering is fully open with the main gate external and a fully enfranchised community is running itself under a ratified constitution. I was never any good at math, so don't come to me for data predictions any more. But I bet the numbers continue to increase proportionally based on what the community offers. Work first, metrics second.

Here is a picture of 20 months of list/forum data for what it's worth:

Not bad, eh?

Well, then, we'll hit the 2 million mark pretty soon... :)
