Skype on Solaris ?

Skype-like systems are definitely important nowadays. The problem is that is is generally very well spread on Windows, but much less on other OS, like Solaris for example.  If you are interested in, I encourage you to check this out:

I've tried it and it worked. I can not say it worked as nicely as Skype on windows, but still, it was somewho not too bad.

For those who are more will to get their hands dirty, there is always Sailfin, a communication oriented version of GlassFish ! :)
Set your own server, link it with your own tools, I did not try it myself but I can say I've seen nice demos !

How to know which application is using which port on Mac and Solaris

I am using often so...

lsof -i -P | grep -i "listen"

Here it is a little more complex.
I got a little script from the net that does that: give it the port you want to scan and it will give you the app using it.

opensolaris [~/bin] $
Please provide a port number parameter for this script
e.g. %content 1521

# is the port we are looking for
if [ $# -lt 1 ]
echo "Please provide a port number parameter for this script"
echo "e.g. %content 1521"
echo "Greping for your port, please be patient (CTRL+C breaks) ~E "
for i in `ls /proc`
pfiles $i | grep AF_INET | grep $1
if [ $? -eq 0 ]
echo Is owned by pid $i
echo -----

Using OpenSolaris but my firefox profile get corrupted on reboot/turning off

I've been using OpenSolaris 2008.11 for some time already, and it's quite OK.
One thing that really push my nerves: every time I reboot or power off OpenSolaris without manually closing Firefox, my Firefox profile gets corrupted and I can not use it any more.

Symptoms when my profile gets corrupted:
- bookmarks does not work anymore
- navigation buttons are not usable
It looks similar to

The workaround is to destroy my Firefox profile, and start a new one, which of course does not make much sens since I loose all my profile info, and there is no way to do that every time I forget to manually and gently close all my Firefox windows before restart/shutdown ! Hum, that's what I am actually doing and I can tell you it bothers me...

All this looks like a regression: it use to work fine in OpenSolaris 2009.05. I am writing this post in case someone has the same problem. I tried so far to get some help on OpenSolaris side, but without success. It might be on Firefox side as well (OpenSolaris 2009.05 had FF2 only, not 3). I'll add comment in case I find a solution.

Hard time for JES Praha team...

As you might know, November 14th 2008, Sun announced a global workforce reduction to align its cost model with the global economic climate. Last Thurdsday, 22th Jan. 2009, was when it actually took effect in Sun Prague's software.

Our team has unfortunatly been affected a lot, shrinking from seven members to two. Only me and Pavel are still on board. This was a really hard and diffucult time for us. Still, some of us are still here, and we are well decided not to let the EMEA G11n side of JavaES components down !

One of the main thing we'll need is it prioratize (allways prioratize in tough times...), so your inputs are more than ever welcomed ! How you use our products, comments about their localization, what is important for you, what is not, etc... You can contact us on

What is Cloud Computing ? By Helena.

I've asked our student Helena to describe shortly and comprehensibly what is Cloud Computing. I honestly think it is a very good review:

Cloud Computing has been one of very hot and widely discussed topics in IT in the recent time. Nevertheless, there is still quite much confusion, fuzz and mystique around this term. What is the right definition of Cloud Computing? What belongs to the Cloud Computing concept and what does not? Who and what is Cloud Computing good for? And where does the whole thing actually come from?...

l10n packages for KDE 4.1.3 on OpenSolaris

Recently I've committed the localization specs for the KDE Project on OpenSolaris. Since they're not a dependency of KDE-consolidation, they will not be built and installed automatically. Here's the short howto for that: [Read More]

Building KDE 4.1.3 on OpenSolaris

OpenSolaris got improved a lot lately, it's no longer ignoring other people's partitions and it smoothly added Windows to grub menu at installation. Hope Linux and others will get same kind reception soon. 2008.11RC2 has almost all I need, but what is missing is a decent Desktop Environment - KDE. KD3 packages can be downloaded from Blastwave, I believe, but since this is already a dead project, it's not worth even trying. To get KDE4 one has to do some compiling, but once you know what to do, it's fairly simple:[Read More]
